So I have just got back from the drs, I have strep throat or something similar, we have to wait to get results back. But now I have a prescription for phenoxymethylpenicillin, at a dose of 500mg, a fair few times a day.
The dr said that to be safe I should feed dd3, 13months in another way, and express at the same time to keep supply up, but I shouldn't bfeed her because its too dangerous. I did express my concerns and asked for another script that may be better suited for me, but there I none apparently.
So my question I how safe is it to still feed dd3, who still has somewhere between 6 to 8 feeds a day, whilst I'm taking these drugs? Or should I skip them and try some more over the counter stuff? I'm not actually worried about me, I just don't want to be sick an risk weaning dd3 because of some medication....
Thanks
hmmm i have been on quite a few different penicillins over the years (thanks to gross tonsilitis) and it has never been an issue with BF. we BF as normal. there are many safe options. I would be asking for a different script...or maybe even for a different GP. very uncool that they have given you something that apparently is no good. have you asked the pharmacist if it is OK to BF with this one? they can check for you too. sounds really strange and not quite right TBH.
all i can add is that when taking the ABs to go hard on the probiotics to avoid nipple thrush
Thanks
Yeah I didn't like her response when I said I didn't want to take anything that would affect bfeeding, and I did question her about it and asked for other options just didn't get them with her.
I shall keep in mind the nipple thrush, thanks
Thanks hoti, I shall keep that number close at hand.
I ended up going to my trusty chemist and talking to them in there. They looked it up for me, and definitely should be avoided if I was bfeeding a newborn, but because she is over 12months she should be safe. The only worry according to them is if she has a sensitivity to penicillin, which will come out in a rash if she is.
