Whats in breastmilk & whats in formula: ingredients list

Like I have always said, a tin of formula is like buying a bottle of multivitamins. But as those bottles of vitamins always say, 'should not replace a balanced diet.'

While i'm not going to say that breast feeding isn't better for babies but i am honestly a bit offended by this comment. I am choosing to formula feed my DD, well in a way i guess i had to as my milk didn't come in until 4 days after she was born so instead of giving her nothing she was started off on formula and then with my stay in hospital i heard so many girls having problems and i just couldnt handle it if i had issues too.

There is so much about supporting women that breast feed and nothing to support women who formula feed their babies, and i didnt realise until now how much slack they actually cop from not only people in the medical profession but from other mums, i actually recieved a lecture from one of my male co workers!

And then there are those women who can't breast feed at all, they tried so hard and had nothing..

Hun as a bf mumma I find there not much support to bf either, unless in a safe place like this. The hard core facts are bm is better for babys. Formula is there if bf cant be done.
You will hear people's opinions in everything you do as a mother, learn that now


Kelly's comment makes sense. But you do have to take into account your own situation (your milk didn't come in) and not get offended

It is not unusual for a Mum s milk to not come in until Day 4 or longer.

I have looked down and congratulated them on being AWESOME, i wonder if i showed DP this list he'd realise they are not HIS but DD's and never want to go near them again...

1stTimeMumma88 - hun you need to make the choice best for you, for what it's worth my BM didn't come in until 2 days after i left hosp so day 4 or 5, i wasn't given a lot of information i was just told to persevere .
We do whats best for our kids but i actually like that statement - all Kelly is saying is BM has a lot more 'balance' in the way a human baby is supposed to feed.. thats not to say that FF isn't giving a baby what it needs at the time. hun.

I showed this list to some high school girls when doing a talk about breastfeeding. They were suitably impressed.

I believe that knowledge is power. Very much so. The more informed we are, the better our choices will be, and the more powerful we will be in our convictions.

That said - breastfeeding is not a lifestyle choice. Artifically feeding babies is not an equal option.

This is not my opinion - this is fact.

Breastfeeding is the biological normal way to feed babies AND toddlers. If child-led weaning is followed, the natural age of weaning varies, just as the natural age for walking, talking and other developmental miletones varies. It is still normal for a 7 year old to still wish to nurse. If you think about it, our 'milk teeth' don't start to come out until after 5 or 6 years old.

Breastfeeding is also a learned skill. It requires encouragement and support.

The ABA is a great place to start learning about breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, they offer Breastfeeding Education Classes. These are as important as childbirth clases. Breastfeeding can be considered the forth trimester. It requires preparation, awareness, a plan.
Breastfeeding might be our biological norm, but because it is not our cultural norm, it can be very hard to establish and maintain breastfeeding. Knowing why breastfeeding is so important can help with perseverance if the early days of establishing breastfeeding are difficult. Having a commitment to breastfeeding and seeking help from reliable reources (such as ABA, you can ring the breastfeeding helpline 24/7 it is 1800 MUM 2 MUM). Having good support around you is also essensial.

If you are uncertain about breastfeeding, you may need to address your feelings before your baby is born. This may mean seeking counselling.

One issue that affects breastfeeding is returning to work. The decision of when and if to return to paid work is a personal one. It is possible to continue breastfeeding, and is beneficial to employers to facilitate it.
