Hun, it is hard Trust your instincts. I know you will make the best decision with the information you have - and that is the very best you can do Thinking of you hun and I hope things get easier soon.
My ds 8 months is allergic to dairy and soy. He gets green mucous poos if I eat either. I have been dairy and soy free since May. I would kill for chocolate right now lol.
I just wanted t ogive you some food ideas for yourself.
Lots of healthy fats- olive oil, avocado, coconut oil. But don't go too overboard!
Eggs are great for breakky and lunch. Some brands of mayo are dairy and soy free.
Plain Corn chips and plain potato chips are great.
Carmen's muesli bars
Hot chips and scallops are good if you want takeaway
You just need to be really thorough In reading labels. Watch out for 'natural flavor' - can be soy.
I am about to try ghee - it is clarified butter and pure fat, so technically shouldn't have milk protein in it
Not all rice milks are equal! I like the one enriched with chickpeas. I prefer nuttlex olive oil. You can't tell the diff with rice milk and nuttlex in baking.
Some choc toppings are dairy free, as is activite
Cocoa is also dairy free
Leb bread great, as is pane Di casa. Most commercial breads and bakeries use soy flour, so be careful if you're buying bread without packaging
Coconut milk great in curries
Watercrackers good
Be careful of things advertised as dairy free - usually have soy
Sorbet is good
Basically, at home it's pretty easy. When you're at someone's house or restaurant it's tricky. I now suggest a few things if people have to cook for me, which helps them, and I find out ahead of time if I need to bring food for myself- that way it's not disappointing to not be able to eat anything
Lots of lolls are ok, but I haven't found dairy and soy free choc except some dark choc, which I don't like
Home made custard can be done with rice milk- you can even use powder
Hope this helps. Pm me if you want specific brands or moral support!
But as others have noted, it might be worth getting a second opinion- it's a big commitment to make if you're not 100percent certain it's necessary. There is formula for milk protein allergy, but it requires a script and only the first script can be from gp, subsequent ones must be specialist (as I understand it).
Hope this helps. Dairy free is a challenge, but definitely do-able. Also helped me lose baby weight very quickly, because I can't eat anything!! Haha. Oh and the girl and the takeaway shop gets the scallops out before I've even spoken!!
