Over the last few days my 8 month doesn't appear to be really that interested having breast feeds during the day and I am wondering if there something that I am doing that is causing this problem.
He is on 3 solid meals a day and I try to work on the following routine.
Wake up - BF
Followed by brekkie about 3/4 hr later. Only exception to this is if he wakes and feeds very early morning and then he'll have breakfast shortly after rewaking for the day (around 9ish)
Morning nap - will try re-offering before he goes down for his morning nap. He is staying up for approx 2.5 hrs at this stage. 99% of the time not interested
Bottle - 11am approx
Lunch - 12.30/1.30
Afternoon nap - again will try offering before he goes down. Most of the time not interested. Will also re-offer when he wakes up. Will take very little here
Tea 5/5.30pm
This is followed by playtime, bath and he is dressed for bed.
At about 7 I then offer him another BF before story and bed time
He is then waking (or I am waking him) at about 10.30pm for a BF and at the moment he is waking for another feed sometime in the middle of the night. He feeds for probably about 10-15 mins at that stage.
My concern is in relation to the amount he is actually taking during the day he really doesn't appear to be interested in feeding that much. His first feed of the morning now lasts max 10 min in total which seems short if it has been say 1 or 2 when he last. during day he will only stay on for a few mins at most.
last night he flat out refused to go on before bed as he had taken very little during day i gave him bottle he drank about 110mls. i expressed.
is there something i am doing wrong or is this normal for 8 month old? i am starting to wean but want it to be gradual not immediate. we had a lot of problems in the begining getting bfing established and dont want to go back to that constant worry about how much milk he is getting/taking. his nappies are okay but with lots of poo.
he has been sick recently so dont know how much this will effect everything.
if you need to know more let me know but need some advice.
If he's sick or starting to move around or going through some other developmental stage then that could explain the reduced interest. Honestly, the best thing is to just offer and let him feed if he wants to and don't if he doesn't. Or even just wait till he asks for it - they know what they need. They are very efficient feeders by that age too, so 1-2 minutes can be plenty of time for a drink.
If you want him to take more milk during the day, you could try dropping that 10:30 feed and see if he's a bit more interested during the day.
Try not to stress and follow his lead
