    Dairy Intolerance

    Hi,
I'm sure there is a thread somewhere about this but i couldn't see it so sorry mods if i'm doubling up too much.

Anyway to add to the cracked nipples and tongue tie issues we are experiencing with bf i'm now wondering if DD2 has a dairy intolerance. She is 3wks old.
The past couple of days she has been really unsettled with obvious tummy discomfort. She has gone from 1-2 poos per day to nearly every nappy change having some there and is also spewing heaps more with some being of the projectile variety. She had one nappy with green mucous too which worried me. She's just not herself.
DH and DD1 have had colds and DD2 also seems to have an asthma type cough and nasal congestion which is affecting her breathing. I started putting saline spray up her nose today and this seems to help for a while.
Anyway during my pregnancy I hardly had any dairy as i have a couple of tiny gallstones which flared up in the pg. But now i've been having yogurt and chocolate and cheese and all the good stuff again. I'm wondering if DD is having a reaction to this or if it's a virus.

    So...
Please tell me what is your experience with dairy intolerance? What were your LOs symptoms? How old were they? How long did it take for the allergy to present itself?
DD has been really good up until now but does it take a while for the dairy to build up in their system and create a problem?
I've had no dairy today but how long would it take to see a difference with an elimination of dairy?

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated.

The symptoms you describe could very likely be due to illness.
I believe an allergy would generally manifest itself in quite severe symptoms and lack of weight gain.
Maybe wait and see if it clears up once she's well again. If you want to look into it further, talk to your doctor or child health nurse. It's best to get the right diagnosis first before you do anuything.
    Hope you're all well soon

It is possible it's a CMPI (Cows' milk protein intolerance), however there are a few things to rule out before worrying about a restrictive diet. Firstly it could be illness. It could also be to do with your supply increasing (perhaps she is attaching better and stimulating your suppply more) and an increase in lactose - this is not harmful and should resolve on its own over the next few weeks as your supply adjusts to her demand. Another option if she has had formula at all is that her gut flora has changed and her tummy is allowing the CMPs into the bloodstream (which usually won't occur at that age) and she is having some discomfort from that. If this is the case, breastmilk will restore the gut flora over the course of the next few weeks, so again this will resolve on its own. Or it could be wind pain from gulping air while feeding - more common in t-t babies as they usually don't attach as well. Or just an unsettled period. The signs you have described are experienced by many babies at one stage or another without a sign of serious problem.

If it was me, I think I would just see what happens over the next few weeks unless it gets worse.

    Thanks ladies,
while the symptoms are still present she doesn't seem as sick anymore and is sleeping well and much happier in general. I'm kind of thinking that if it was dairy upsetting her then it would take longer then a day to get it out of my system and have any effect on her. I had suspicion about oversupply as she often has milk streaming out the side of her mouth during feeds and usually only has one breast per feed. She is gaining plenty of weight. I've looked on the aba site about oversupply and spoke to our local councilor today and hope to go to a lactation clinic tomorrow. Unfortunately it's only once a week but i need to get all these issues sorted.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it takes weeks to get it al out of your system.
All the best at the clinic tomorrow, hope you get things sorted.
