Congratulations on the birth of little Daisy. I can see, from your son's breastfeeding history, how you would be so worried that it would all be unfolding again - but I think there is much that is different this time. At two weeks everything is just really new for both of you. It's a time of experimenting to see what works best for both of you - and you have certainly got a wealth of suggestions her. Try feeding her on the same breast for a block of 3-4 hours - see if that helps. If not, go back to giving her the first breast and then offering the second.
Looking deeper, I wonder, do you have a family history of food allergies or intolerances? This could be irrelevant right now - what you are going through is pretty comon in the newborn period, but could be worth looking at further down the track if problems persist.
pixie, you must have read my mind... I just logged on to say I can't take this anymore...
We're up to five or six hours of fussing, crying, screaming, burping and farting a day. From when we wake up to three hours later, plus another two or three hours at night. I can't get a proper feed into her- she'll feed for five minutes, then start screaming (and repeat). I can hear the air bubbles moving around in her belly.
So... she's taking a dummy now, occasionally. Massaging her belly works a little. Holding her up right helps too, but she isn't big enough for the Bjorn yet, and the Peanut Shell doesn't sit her up, and I just can't sit and hold her for hours with ds to run around after. I've just started giving her the
Brauer's Colic Relief, which seems to be helping a little bit too. Reluctant to try pro-biotics, only beacuse every time I've used them in the past I've ended up with thrush.
Ideas, ladies, any ideas are most `welcome. Dh goes back to work on Monday and that's when things will really get hectic I don't know what I'm doing wrong here- how did I end up with another baby who screams for hours on end?
Lori, Did you see Barb's comment about a family history of food intolerances/allergies? It could be worthwhile looking into. I can't remember, have you had an LC? A good LC is probably the best person to help you at this point.
It's interesting that the probiotics have given you thrush, when they're supposed to keep it at bay!!! Were you taking them at the same time as antibiotics or something? I'm pretty sure you can get babybiotics too, maybe that's something to look into, that way you're not taking them.
It could be silent reflux. Mel's baby had that and as soon as it was sorted out she was an angel. I'm not sure what you need to do to have it checked out - maybe see your doc, I think there is a test for it. Also can anyone lend you a sling which will hold her upright - I'm thinking a mei tai or SSC, our resident slingaholics can probably give you an idea of the best option.
you're doing a great job
Well I had a visit from the mchn today, who is also an LC and runs the local bfing clinic. She came just after a feed and spent two hours with us, until dd finally settled.
In her opinion, it is silent reflux- pixie, you were right - with a bit of colic thrown in for good measure. She advised me to take dd to the GP over the next few days and get some Zantac to trial her on, and see if that makes a difference. Medication is probably not my first choice but I'm at my wit's end here. Crossing my fingers it makes some kind of difference..
Do you know of any paediatric chiropractors in your area? The one I go to has a lot of success with treating reflux babies. My DS2 had reflux and our chiro gave his shoulder an adjustment and gave me advice on feeding. Within a few days his reflux was gone.
I hope you find a solution soon so you can have a break .
