i have a bub that feeds every couple of hours through the day and this was one of my major stressors with going back to work - how to keep up my milk supply for her on the days i'm home, how to have enough milk for her during the day - all that stuff did my head in
anyway, i went back to work a couple of weeks ago - i built up a supply of EBM (enough for maybe 5 days if she was taking 2 hourly feeds) in the freezer, and when i went back to work i expressed on my lunch break to keep milk supply up. i don't get a lot but it's enough for a small snack feed for her. when i'm not there, she will have one, maybe two small milk feeds during the day - when i'm around, she has at least four....
i have to leave at 6.30am to drop her off at mum's before work (or 7am if i'm leaving her with DH) - i feed her last thing before i leave from mums (or home), and generally first thing when i get home. i go four hours or whatever, then express for my comfort more than anything. she is more than happy to go long stretches without milk if it's not "on tap" as it is when we're together.
if you're looking at full days, for your own comfort and to reduce risk of mastitis, you'll probably want to express - but if it's a five hour shift, you may no need to
