DD2 has been exclusively breastfed, we did attempt a bottle one night, but she looked at me with her mouth opened and wasn' the least bit interested, and got upset so she got the boob But she will go into some daycare, in probably a few months and I was looking at using a cup instead of a bottle.
Has anyone used the Medela Baby Cups, or have suggestions for cups thay would be a good style to try. I am not in a rush, but if I am going to have to buy something it would be good to have something ready, when we start BLS in a month or so.
I use the Nuby brand cups with the silicone teats as dd wouldn't drink from a hard spout as it was too different and her gums were quite tender from teething so I'd assume that would have been part of it too.
I have also used tommee tippee cups with silicone teats. They are spill proof too which is great. HTH
how old is she *Beema*? My DS is 6 months and has 2 bottles in his life, and although won't take one from me, he's happy to take it from DH. He's happy to drink water from a bottle, or the nuby teated cups, he seems to suck automatically on it... I will be interested to see the suggestions.
She is just over 5 months, isn't much of a dummy sucker, I tried the Pigeon Peristaltic Teats, and I could get DH or someone else to try, but I am thinking that there isn't much point introducing a bottle now and that she might be able to go to a cup, we haven't introduced water as there hasn't been any need, she does take medications from a syringe very well (sucking the Gaviscon out of a Neurofen Syringe).
But I did see these non spouted/teat cups where you can see the milk go in easily and was wondering whether I give them a shot but curious as to whether anyone else has used them
Sorry Beema, I can't help with the non spouted/teat cups because we just used a normal cup to try DD on. We found she did okay but it's constant supervision and it was just too much work, especially in the daycare environment. So we tried the pigeon system with the straw. I actually got it as a baby shower gift and it had a bottle top, a teat and a straw but we went straight to the straw. I just disregarded the fact it said 8 months plus LOL She takes the straw no problems, it took a little while for her to work out how to suck and swallow at the same time, we got lots of suck and spit but now she's a pro Just an alternative in case your LO doesn't take to the cup.
DD is 9 months and she has a Tommee Tippie bottle / cup thing that has a silicone spout. I guess it is in between a bottle and a cup bit it is really getting her used to holding and tipping it into her mouth herself. It doesnt spill, so she still has to suck when she tips it up. We are having alot more success with this than the cup with handles I tried.
Another for the Nuby here. DD wont take a bottle or a dummy but will drink from a nuby cup with the soft spouty thingy, she isnt quite 5 months yet. I first tried her when she was hungry with expressed milk in it as i have to be away from her shortly for half a day and was worried that she couldnt feed.
Thank you for all your feedback, I don't think by the sounds of it it is worth getting the Medela ones
starangelk ~ I did see that system and I wonder if DD maybe ok with a straw as she can suck from the syringe, I will look at bit closer at that one and see, how old was your LO when she took to the straw? DD1 didn't get the straw until she was nearly 2!
MRSB26 ~ It is good to know that your DD who is a bit younger but probably about the same developmentally wise is taking the Nuby cup, do you warm the emb at all, or just give it a room temperature? All the milk I have is too old for her now as it is only in the freezer above the fridge, so we have been giving it to DD1 with a bit of Milo she loves it, but she doesn't "like" Booby Milk. So I would have to express some fresh milk for her anyway.
LilChookie ~ the cups you have menitoned sound like the one's DD1 had, she had a Heinz one to start and then the TT (which she still has at nighttime, jsut so she doesn't spill when she is drinking and sleepy.
Thankyou all for your suggestions I might have to try a few different one's to see what she takes
I have a freezer full too of 'older milk'.I should do the same and give it to DS, i was just going to keep it to water down dd'd solids when we started. I warmed it up, it was expressed that morning and given that afternoon when i tried it. I just heated it in a jug of water till lukewarm. I think she found it easy to drink from the nuby cup as they kinda chew it and that opens the spout so the liquid flows through freely without them really trying ITMS? She got a taste and them was like "oh, ok, this is nice" lol. Be warned, because its flows a bit more freely, its messy too so double up the bibs!
Goodluck with it, alteast if she doesnt enjoy the cup now, she probably will later and they only cost about $5 so not really a huge amount to waste.
Beema, I started DD on the straw at 5 months.........yep. The midwife actually suggested it to me as I was BFing and bottle feeding due to working full time and I was very concerned that adding a teat to the mix would equal nipple confusion. At 5 months we could suck and spit, at 6 months I thought about giving up as she was still sucking and spitting but then she suddenly got it and since about 7 months, she's been drinking a cup of water easily. These days she can easily get rid of 50 or 60 mls in one big gulping session. LOL
I'm all for the playtex cups you get in big w (yep the bra brand). Non spill and so easy to keep clean, so milk shouldn't be a problem in it. I've used there for ds and dd. Dd was prob about 5 months when she first tried, but has now perfected it at 9 months. It's soft rubber but is more spouty than the nuby one. She is also a straw lover, that started around 6 months too.
