Plenty of wet and pooey nappies, at least one a feed sometimes two, it is a bit of a nuisance especially when you don't have a working washing machine at the moment (so glad the newbie is coming tomorrow )
Sounds like things are going great! Go the shields if they are keeping everything nice and comfortable and I'm sure when she is bigger you won't need them anymore. Great to see BFing is so much easier this time as to the chucking if she is well and happy then probably nothing serious. Try a slightly shorter feed maybe she is having a bit more than she needs
We are still going with the shields and she is going great guns, I am getting a bit more concerned about the chucking, she is now doing it a lot more and larger amounts, I am just feeding her one side a feed, and even after that she is chucking, and it is a real acidy smell now, not just a bit of excess milk. I am not sure if this is just because she is 5 weeks old and getting into the "Colic" age or whether it could be a sign of reflux. She is screaming in pain before each spew, and is unsettled afterwards and is grunting quite a bit as she sleeps as well.
She has a Paed appointment next Friday, so not sure if I should try and do something about it sooner or leave it until then. I don't know a lot about reflux, or if there are any specific signs I should look for or if this is just normal, I might have to get used to smelling like acidy breast milk!!
hmmm I would check with the paed about reflux. If it is really bothering her/ you then ask your GP beforehand.
Hopefully it is just a stage/ or you can get something to sort it out quickly....

DS1 was a 'happy chucker'. Just drank more than he needed at each feed so had to let some back out again. If DD seems happy even when she has been chucking then don't worry. I was told that DS1 would have been really upset and uncomfortable if it had been reflux.
Yesterday it was a shocker of a day, both DH and I were covered by the end of the day, she has a great trick of missing the spew cloths everytime and getting us or herself She has been doing some insane powerchucks, at 4am this morning she was lying on the pillow on my lap after feeding and managed to cover me from my boob to my hip, and it wasn't a small amount either I was soaked and had to change my PJ's! But it had so much power that she didn't even get a drop on herself
Today has been a bit better, not as unsettled, but still chucking a lot. I will se how she goes overnight and tomorrow, I only thought this morning that I can get an appointment with my MW who is helping with my BF'ing (but haven't seen her for a couple of weeks) and see what she thinks as she can also speak directly with DD's Paed, or I can see our GP, so I have a few options, but if she isn't too bad then I will wait for her appointment on Friday.
Thanks Berme, one of my nephews was a happy chucker as well, sounds very much like your DS1. Did he get very aggitated after feeding until he had chucked up what he didn't need, DD goes from screaming, scruching her legs up, then pushing them out straight and arching her back, and it take a good half an hour after a feed for her to have had her 3-4 chucks and start to settle better. She is also quite a grunter while she sleeps, but I have no idea if this means anything or just her Thankyou for replying
Do you have a baby chair or a sling - keeping her upright after feeding can really help with chucking. And you may want to rearrange the pillows so that she's not totally flat when she's feeding too.
I have a swing which we use to help keep her up, I also have an array of slings and carriers and am using the close carrier to keep her upright and settled if she can't go down. She isn't completely flat when feeding, on a bit of an angle, I did this with DD1 for a while at one stage, I will try feeding her in a more sitting position to see if that helps, thankyou
DS1 did used to get cranky until he had spewed. Luckily he usually didn't take long to get it back up again. For some reason he just didn't seem to be able to stop drinking until he was full. He was amazing though, he could have gone to sleep on the boob and then slept for 2 or 3 hours, then spew when he got up again! And he usually missed the spew cloths as well.
Keeping him upright never seemed to make a difference. I still had a nappy against my chest underneath him when he was in his carrier. It did help a bit if I stopped him part way through a feed and held him up and 'burped' him in the middle. He generally wouldn't feed for quite as long on the second side. Still spewed... just not as much.
The spewing pretty much stopped after he started solids but for the first 5 months of his life I smelt like sour milk constantly. He still had lots of milk feeds each day, but it must have helped him work out when he was full?
It is pretty annoying, but it does stop eventually. Hopefully it isn't anything serious and she just needs to work out when she is full.
I remember people being surprised that my DS didn't wear a bib to "catch the dribbles" - but that was there was no point! We would just take several complete changes of clothes for bub and at least one spare top for me! And half a dozen cloth nappies to deal with the mess...
I just spoke to my MW and she seems to think it sounds like reflux, and said if I can hold off until her Paed appointment on Friday do, if not to take her into one of the two hospitals nearby and they will be able to help out.
It is pretty annoying, but I feel for her because on the very few times I have had reflux it has been really yuck, so I couldn't imagine feeling like that all the time
