Iv noticed only now what feels like a few little lumps like a cluster of hardness on my left breast at the top, feels like it did during the first week of breastfeeding..Ihave not noticed this since then so its been months ,as DD is 7 months now.
Could it be mastitis(sp) ? it only feels uncomfotable if i press really hard on it.
what should i do?
I might add that this breast does get a good comfort sucking workout
Shell, if you can't get rid the lumps with heat/massage etc, you should see your dr. They might give you some ABs or even refer you for an ultrasound (sometimes the US can unblock them).
Sounds exactly like a blocked duct to me. I had the same thing, including the white blistery thing, last week - I got rid of it by massaging it in a hot shower then feeding DD immediately after.
Thanks guys.Just had a shower ran the water over it and massaged ,DD had a feed after as well , it went down a bit and i hand expressed a bit of the milk out , it is down but i can still feel a bit of hardness but not where near as bad as before the shower.I guess i will do it again in the morning xx
If it's still lumpy and not hot or really painful then ultrasound from a physiotherapist is excellent for unblocking ducts. Just make sure that the physio is experienced in duct-zapping (ask when you call for an appointment).
That's a useful tip Kmn - I've been getting a few blocked ducts recently because DD's all over the place with cutting down on her feeds, so I'll keep that under my hat for future reference!
Oh I used to get those milk blisters allll the time at one pint. They were so painful! If massaging isn't working, *****ing the blister with a sterlised needle usually did the trick for me (or you can get the doctor to do it if you're squeamish). The relief when all that banked up milk flowed out was amazing LOL! Annoying how a tiny bit of grown over skin can cause so many hassles.
I had this problem constantly & found it painful, frightening & was very worried...it eventually affected my milk supply. I consulted a LC and she couldn't find any obvious reason for it (i.e. poor latching) so suggested it could be due to a high fat content in my milk. The usual recommendation for this is to reduce fat in your diet but I already have a low fat diet so she suggested I take Lecithin (1200 mg, 3 x per day) which is meant to help break the fats down. It worked. It took a couple of weeks but I haven't had blocked ducts for about two months & I was getting them every other day prior to taking Lecithin.
The white spots I removed with a sterilised needle as suggested by allycat06. This blockage at the nipple is what causes the blockage further back & for me the more I massaged, the more milk I stimulated but it couldn't get out so the pain was worse....you must clear this spot. I didn't find it painful or sqeamish at all & I have a very weak stomach for anything medical or blood or anything. I found if I cleared the spot and fed DS immediately it was the best way to clear the blockage. The only time this didn't work was when I had been blocked for days & the water from the milk had been reabsorbed by my body so the milk was very very thick. I made a warm bath, laid tummy down & expressed...lots of stringy thick milk.
