    Mastitis question

    Hi all,

Am on the mend from mastitis - have a couple of days of antibiotics left.

This morning I noticed that some of the redness had returned to my breast - more of a brown 'shadow' than the bright red of mastitis. Does anyone know what this means?

Am going to the drs on Wednesday, but was wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

    Thanks

I've never experienced a shadow, but if you are still on the abs I wouldn't worry. Ask your dr for a follow-on script, because if there's any remaining tenderness or redness you should probably finish a second course. Alternatively, it can be good to have a script on hand if you feel it coming on again in future.

While you're recovering (and if you ever feel like it's coming in future), try taking an anti-inflammatory for pain. It has the bonus of reducing the inflammation in the breast tissue itself, which can sometimes help stop an infection developing. Also, warm compresses/hot pack before feeding will help your baby drain the breast and an ice-pack afterwards. I found the anti-inflammatories and the ice pack the most effective treatments in easing both the pain and helping my breast/s recover more quickly (I was unfortunate enough to get mastitis about six times, for no real reason (other than oversupply) - just lucky I guess! ). Also, switching your baby to a different hold on the affected side can help drain the breast differently.

How are you feeling in yourself now?

Hey surprised, just wondering - have your nipples been swabbed for infection at all? ABA counsellor said thath infection is a very commonly misdiagnosed (as thrush or mastitis) problem causing nipple pain and it's a good idea to get it checked out if you have recurring problems. If they swab they can give you the specific antibiotic for the infection. just a thought.
Anyway, I hope this is the end of your troubles
