    Question Motillium Question

Ok with DS2 i was on Motillium until the day he stopped feeding which was around the 10month mark. There was some reason for this originally with me giving up up early on then not being able to cope with the thought of give up so i re-lactated with the help of the Motillium. The day i stopped the Motillium so did my supply - due to Dr refusing to prescribe it any longer.
I guess my question is will feeding be a problem again without the use of the Motillium or am i best speaking to my Dr and having a script handy for if i need to fill it. Other people experiences would be great..

My LC recommended I have a script for Motillium ready for the first couple of weeks, and also fenugreek / blessed thistle.

I would really highly recommend trying acupuncture for milk supply if you end up needing motilium again- my doctor refused it after a while too so I tried acupuncture and it was much more effective than the motilium. After a while I was able to stop the acupuncture and I am still feeding now @ almost 20 months - the only time my supply tends to dip is just before AF and I have acupressure points I can use then if I need to.

There's no reason to suspect that things wouldn't proceed normally for tj
his baby, in fact it seems that they probably did with you last baby, but your prolactin levels were disrupted when you stopped breastfeeding temporarily and the motilium assisted with icreasing your prolactin levels. There would be no reason to think a normal healthy women wouldn't produce enough milk. You don't need pills or herbs to breastfeed. Please consider doing a breAstfeeding class with the Australian breastfeeding Association. In these things knowledge is power

    Thanks ladies

Kazbah that was my thought as a just in case.

Swoop wow thats definately something to look into - not sure if i'll be able to get that up here as we are pretty regional do they have to be trained in a specific area for this i'm wondering at the moment.

Barb i'm trying to be confident i my body that it will produce the milk needed to feed my baby without having to resort to pills and potions. Unfortunately i don't think the ABA have classes up here, we are quite regional. I do have the breastfeeding naturally book from the ABA though so that may be something to go through again. Are there any other books out there that talk about fussy periods for babies and what to expect from a baby at what stage?

Dannim I think they would have to be a qualified acupuncturist, mine trained for 4 years I think. It's a wholistic approach to do with traditional eastern medicine rather than specific types of problem or parts of the body IYKWIM. It's to do with balancing the qi and the body making enough blood etc.

I think "Breastfeeding Naturally" is your best guide. Even if ABA don't have classes they will have meetings, I feel sure, and will often have discussions on different aspects of breastfeeding and mothering - very worth going to, you will get heaps of support. Where are you precisely (you can PM me if you want to )

Hi Barb i'm in Port Hedland WA. After i had DS2 i know a couple of the ladies with the ABA that had put so much into it were starting to ramp down and not be as involved.

With DD1 I was on Motillium, 60-100mg a day to try and maintain a supply and I still struggled greatly and as soon as I reduced it my supply dropped. DD was a poor feeder, and a painful feeder until almost 6 months of age, I really think she just didn't have the feeding right which resulted in a poor supply.

DD2 I was paranoid about having a low supply again, so I set about preparing myself as much as possible, (the whole story is in DD2's Birth Story in my sig, you can skip with pregnancy/labour and go to the last section for what I did about feeding ), but in short I started Motilium on the morning of day 3 and in the end we were off motillium byt the time she was about 5 weeks old, and I have never needed it.

And we are here 7 1/2 months later and she has been exclusively breastfed and is growing beautifully

Beema i did follow your story quietly and remember you saying what the plan was with the Motillium. I'm a bit like you DS1 was such a poor lazy feeder and ended up being FF by 1 month to just get something into him plus the jaundice didn't help. With DS2 complete opposite he as just a very thirsty baby and even now 2.5 yrs on he drinks alot of fluid. Think i might just try the solo route first after reading what you said along with Barb and see how we go.
