DS is 13months and still has 3-4 breastfeeds a day (morning, nap time, mid afternoon, bed). I'm also 23weeks pregnant.
Morning he is content with the boob and is on for what can seem like forever and comes off satisfied. Night he generally falls asleep on the boob before I transfer him to his cot where he sleeps/self settles through the night.
BUT, of a day he is getting frustrated with it. He will let me know he wants it, but after a few minutes he pushes it away, wants the other breast and the same situation occurs - a few minutes before pushing it away. To me he is clearly wanting milk otherwise he'd be happy to just comfort suck?? He will have a big drink of water, or 100ml of milk from a cup, if he can't get what he wants from the boob.
I know I don't drink enough water, or eat enough, but I am just getting back to eating and being able to stomach water after all the morning sickness.
Is my supply starting to suffer? Is it necessary for him to have the 1-2 day feeds (I have been holding him off on the afternoon one of late because he gets too frustrated)
Being pregnant causes a drop in milk supply. There's not much you can do about it. Let him feed when he wants to - you may find that shorter, more frequent feeds work a bit better.
My supply dropped earlier in pregnancy, and DD was getting frustrated, but she seems to have accepted it more and is happy to take what she can get. if you are still happy to continue feeding, your little one might start to understand that some feeds are big ones, and other feeds will be smaller ones. i do the swap sides too, to see if the other one is any better.
At the ABA meeting, one of the counsellors said that if you are feeding fewer feeds a day, the immune factors are more concentrated so that bub still gets them. They might not get as much nutrition from milk as they used to, but they still get the immune boost.
At 23 weeks, you might be starting to get colustrum coming through too? i'm not there yet, but i've heard that bubs poos can get more liquidy when this happens.
i was lucky that dd1 could tell me what was going on with my milk while i was pg. she would tell me it either 'tasted yuck' or 'its empty', she would often have a confort suck though. then two days after dd2 was born she had a few suck then commented ''they are so juicy again...mmmmmm''. i thought she would wean while i was pg, but she stuck in there...patience
