Number of Bf for 7 day old?

My d's was born last Friday, he's a great bfer with strong suction. He was a good size, lost a bit of weight until my milk came in on Monday but was back to within 100gms of his birth weight when we left hospy yesterday. He slept great last night, I hater fed between 7-9:30, he woke at 1 for a good 45 minute feed the. Slept until 6:30am. He fed for 20 mins and I fed him again at 9am but he only took one side briefly. He woke at 12 and once again only wanted one side briefly......and now he's asleep again. Is this normal? I
Worried he's sleeping too much and maybe not feeding enough. In hospital he was feeding every few hours for over 30 minutes. Is he too tired to feed properly or just an efficient feeder?

I probably just have to trust him, I know I have heaps of milk so it's up to him to take it. I am demand feeding but I feel like I'm the one demanding he feeds, not the other way around.

    Any thoughts?

Just press on. You might find things change drastically in a week or so.. I remember having this concern with my 3rd bub who was also a good size. She was always a good sleeper etc and I remember in the first couple of weeks she slept a lot - I think she woke up a bit though and started feeing more.Cluster feeding actually - for hours at night (but slept through so wroth it).

Anyway excuse me rambling on but I think that with a healthy baby you can just follow their lead.

How's his output? That's generally the best indication of if he's getting enough! 5-6 heavy wet disposable nappies or 6-8 cloth. Does that sound like what he's giving out?

When he's awake is he generally happy and alert? As alert as a 7 day old bubs can be I mean!

I think between 8-12 feeds in 24 hours is about what to expect. But every baby is different.

You're doing all the right things. Keep it up

Can you maybe change his bum b/w sides, wake him a little and offer other side?
DD1 was a 'lazy' feeder, falling asleep and only taking 1 side, doing the above helped.
Sounds like your doing well though.

Sent from my iPhone, more than likely while I should be doing something else!

    Hi,

Just to be on the safe side, wake him every 3 hours and feed him. Is he jaundiced at all? What are his wet and dirty nappies like? The more milk he gets into him the more wakeful he will be. Just give it a few more days before you let him take his l-plates off and do it all by himself. You are doing great

i'd keep an eye on the clock a little bit, but that said, my DD1 was the total terminator on the boob from almost day dot. she would feed off one side only and for about 10 mins (15 MAX!)...i swear though at times i thought my whole boob would be ripped off from her ferocity hahaha.

My DD is almost 4 weeks. In hospital she fed pretty regularly every 3 hours or so, sometimes with a top up.

By 2 weeks she was feeding 6 times in 24 hours (sometimes 7 times). Some feeds take up to 60 mins both sides, sometimes she's done in 30-40 mins. And she's gaining weight like a champion.

At the end of the day if she's gaining weight and filling enough nappies, then don't stress!!!

Thank you everyone!! We are getting lots of wet and dirty nappies, I totally forgot about output! Of course that makes sense. I feel a bit better as he had a 15 minute feed before and a bit of awake time. I'm also not swaddling him and giving him naps in the loungeroom so he's snoozing and when he wakes I offer the boob.

Thank you again for the reassurance, no doubt I'll have more questions!!

I'm on my phone so please forgive typos.

Well done! Seems like you're a natural at producing good quality milk

We're still only at 6 feeds a day, and on average DD has gained 220g a week since birth. Woohoo!!!

Wow - that's brilliant. Interestingly, the scientists have reasearched all sorts of womens' milk fro all over the globe in all sorts of situations, and it's all great quality! But well done Strangelk!
