    One boob or two?

Not really a BFing problem as such, but DS has thrown me another curve ball and I wanted to see what other's experiences were.

DS has been a one-boob man since birth. He empties one boob, and that's it for the feed. Most of the time if I offer the second boob he spits it out. Occasionally in the evenings he'll take both boobs.

Only the last couple of days he's emptied one boob and screamed until I give him the second boob at almost every feed. I'm a bit shocked - it doesn't feel like a growth-spurt. He finishes one boob and glares at me like "is that all you've got??!"

Is it normal for a bub to start needing feeds from both boobs as s/he gets older? I just assumed that my boobs would increase their supply as he required. Maybe he needs both from now on?

What have other's experienced? One of my MG says she's always fed from both boobs since birth, because her "boobs are small." That seems like a weird thing to say. Anyone?

Yep, that's normal. My DD only fed from one side when she was a newborn and then as she got older she wanted both at every feed. Now she's back to just having one side at a time to go to sleep.

sounds normal to me. DD2 would decide during the feed if she wanted more or not. Sometimes she finished both boobs and then kept sucking for comfort. Other times she would only have half of the boob and be satisfied. meh - babies, we just work them out and then they go and change on us.

This is what my DD did. She wasn't satisfied with one side and went to two from then on. Then the LHS one wasn't really doing a good enough job for her as a toddler and it got little more than a perfunctory suck. DD (now weaned) still is able to point to her favourite and say "I like that boobie, Mummy". When we talk about having #2 she tells me that the baby can have the other boobie, but she wants hers back again.

Your DS is a good communicator

I sometimes feed both sometimes one. I always offer the other & sometimes she drains both. I think she sometimes finds more comfort on one side than the other depending on the day & boob.

There are always curve balls huh, I've gotten a new one at the mo just trying to go with the flow but still makes me a little anxious.

As the others have said, this is totally normal.

It is actually a common misconception that small boobs hold less milk. Some mums do have more storage capacity than others, but this had absolutely nothing to do with breast size.

Keep up the great work hun. It sounds like you and your DS are a great team.

I used to feed just one side at a time and now little miss expects both sides. I sometimes worry that she pulls off her non favourite side just so that I will put her on the favourite side!

In the early days mothers usually relatively overproduce.....and babies are small (on their lplates) They are often satisfied with just one side. But generally, over the fist few weeks after birth babies will come to want both sides at each feed. They get bigger and stronger and can guzzle down a breast in no time.
Babies have a way of keeping you on your toes - just when you think you *get it* they move on to a new stage. Keep up the good work

DS only fed on one side each feed until he was about 5-6 months old then he would have both sides.

DD2 is chopping and changing all over the place, completely random, she will have one boob, sometimes two, sometimes she doesn't even really finish one other times she will drain both, but she is pretty regularly feeding 3 hourly, and at the most four hours between a feed, but she is putting on weight really well, so I know she is getting enough

You are doing a fabulous job hun

DS decided today he wants both sides, completely random as we haven't done that since he was tiny tiny! I thought it odd timing as we started solids yesterday, I thought he would a little less milk- not more!
