My 8 week old ds has had colic since he was born. He is fully breastfed. Recently i've been taking him to a Physiotherapist and she has helped him alot, but he still isn't completely settled. Most days he seems to struggle to dirty his nappy. He always seems to be straining and it has been giving him tummy pain. I've had to cut out things in my diet like dairy and wheat products, because i've been told they are hard to break down through my milk for his tummy to digest. This has not helped alot so my Physio has given him something by Bioceuticals called Probiotics for digestion. Has anyone heard of this or tried it. I just want to research it before giving it to him just to be sure. thanx
When you say he struggles - do you think he's constipated at all? Or just uncomfortable when he goes?
Plenty of wet & dirty nappies?
DS was like this and it improved greatly by the time he was 12 weeks or so, and you may find this is something that improves with time.
I don't know anything about the product you mention, but my understanding is that the best source of probiotics your baby can get are in your breastmilk.
One thing that we found helped ease tummy pain was Brauers stomach calm.
It can be normal for a bf baby to go 10 days without pooing. True constipation will mean they cannot pass stools at all because they will be rock hard pebbles. Is his stools a runny mustardy colour with what looks like bits of cottage cheese though it? This is the normal style for bf babies, if it looks different it can suggest something other issues. But there motions generally get better with time as they become more used to the sensations.
If bubs is solely on breast milk then it shouldnt be causing any digestion problems, unless there is some other underlying medical condition. I wouldnt be using any manufactured digestion products, your milk is adequate. And I would probably ask a pharmacist or doctor before giving anything.
Have you tried using Infacol, its designed to help the little bubbles of air causing wind to join together to create bigger bubbles, helping it to either burp easier or pass as a fart easier. It may relieve the tummy pains caused by small amounts of wind getting trapped in the stomach and bowel.
Studymum, for older bf babies it is true that 10 or so days between poos is quite normal. However in babies under 12 weeks, less than 2 poos a day can be a sign of problems.
Lozza, how is he going now? As has been suggested, usually these things improve by about 12 weeks, but if not you might need to consider trying a full elimination diet. Cutting out dairy won't work if you are still eating milk solids and these are found in quite a lot of foods, many that you wouldn't expect. A dietician will be able to help with a diet plan if it comes down to that. If you can hold out though, I'd wait a couple of weeks to see if it improves by itself.
If things haven't improved, post again and we can give you some other ideas of things to try.
Thanx for the advice ladies, well ds2 has settled down alot but still has some bad days. He dirties his nappies regularly but squirms alot in pain like he is straining like he is constipated but is still dirtying his nappies its weird. I got told its because he is having trouble breaking down the foods in my milk to digest i dont know if thats true though. I have tried infacol and another two other brands similar but doesnt seem to make a difference
