    WWYD?

Short story...Thursday i ended up in emergency and Friday i had my appendix removed, due to pain DP had DD overnight and had to feed her formula as i couldnt pump (due to pain but also medications) as soon as i could BF again i did as DD and i were admitted to maternity ward to recover. All up DP had her 2 nights on formula one day on my expressed milk & formula...

Im now home and on antibiotics which the chemist told me will effect the taste of my milk and DD may go off my milk because of it. Tonight she has been really unsettled whilst feeding and squirming around so i gave her formula and she was fine, DP has just gone to get a tin of formula JIC. I just squeazed my boob and plenty of milk poured out so it must taste funny?

Question is do i keep feeding her my breastmilk or should i wait til im of the ABs? As the chemist said the ABs wont effect my milk other than taste & i really dont want to stuff anything up so figured id ask you ladies i really want to continue BFing too

Sorry if this is all over the shop keep getting distracted..

I would keep putting her on the breast at each feed. How long are you on AB's for? If she is really unsettled could you FF after offering the breast and then pump to maintain supply?

    ETA lovely ticker pic hehehe

That was my train of thought too. On ABs for about a week, one finishes before the other. Pumping i dont really get a lot would that matter?

I know a lovely photog took it huh, sooo talented hehe

I would keep feeding her and not use the formula. Pumping is a PITA and doesn't empty the boob the same way as a baby does and using a bottle for too long could cause nipple confusion and attachment issues.
I kept feeding through medication that changed the taste and after a few days we were back to normal.

Call the ABA for sure. When I was on ABs I found it made DD a bit unsettled but I kept feeding. I personally would use the formula as a last resort and give pumping a miss (only because I never had any success with it and it is just another job to do when you should be resting). Remember to rest and drink heaps of water. GL

    How are you going hun?

I find it unusual that the chemist would tell you it might change the taste of your bm. I would think just about anything you eat *might* change the taste of your bm, but that's the beauty of it, your baby is designed to continue to feed no matter what you've eaten. ABs are not in themselves particularly special. It's kinda hard to really figure out what changes in taste are taking place anyway, bm is very, very sweet and I've never heard of a panel of bm-taste testers who specifically check for the changes in every medication put out. I'd be inclined to discount this advice on the basis that it's probably unlikely and illogical.

Your little bub has just spent a few days without you. The change has probably also upset you and you're recovering from surgery. I'm not surprised she's unsettled or that you're now worried about the effect on your supply. One of the reasons she might be unsettled is that your let-down isn't as fast as the bottle she's had for a couple of days. She will adapt back to bfing, if you persist. Be aware that ABs increase the chance of thrush, so keep an eye on her mouth and your nipples. This can make her unsettled if she's uncomfortable. It's also possible that not directly bfing your DD for a couple of days has had a short-term effect on your milk supply. If you feed her often this will correct itself. Every time she's unsettled, hungry or whatever, put her to the breast. Take her to bed with you if you are both more comfortable there. If she is squirming and unhappy while bfing, leave it for a few mins and try again.

I hope you are back to yourself soon and so is your DD. What a stressful thing to go through with a newborn!

I would just keep BFing as you normally would and ditch the formula altogether. You've been away from each other for a couple of days so she might be a bit unsettled just bc of that. And also getting used to BF again when bottle feeding is much less effort for her and fills up her tummy quickly iykwim? I have BF when on ABs aswell and DD didn't seem to mind, as Jennifer said, everything changes the taste of your milk.

I'm sure everything will be back to normal in no time! Rest up and I hope you're feeling better.

The chemist said it would have a metallic taste and i would have a metallic taste in my mouth also which i do. I BF her when she wakes at night and during the day i feed her then take my medication so it has a few hours to go through my system before i feed again - not sure if thats how it works but we seem to be doing ok by me doing it that way. The only feed she is unsettled with is the night feed before bed at the moment so ive been giving her a bottle then. Which im ok with for now, then when im done with ABs we will try drop that bottle and go back to fully BFing.

Supply seems to be fine, i called the ABA and the woman i spoke to was so encouraging and supportive! We seem to be back in a rhythm kinda so think i just had a(nother) minor freak out!

Glad to hear you've been having better bfs since. I would say your supply just needs to catch up in that case. Are you starting to feel better, hun?

Feeling a lot better thanks for asking! Still aching in my belly button where they stitched me but i can get up and down easier now! I think i feel a cold coming on, i have a sore throat and im not sure if its from the breathing tube they put down there (the anaesthetist said i may have a sore throat just not sure if i would this long after surgery) or if its a cold coming on!
