So I am on day 2 of a nasty gastro bug. I am able to keep small amounts of water down every now and then but no food at all yet. So after 48hrs of no food and a minimum of water just enough to keep me out of hospital I've dropped 4kg's and my supply has suffered a massive blow. I'm struggling to keep up with the demands of dd especially seeing as I feel awful and honestly the last thing I want is her stuck to my boob 24/7.
Unfortunately it doesn't look like I am going to get any better any time soon either. I have at least another day of this I reckon as I still feel awful. So what can I do to get that supply back?? I am drinking as much water as I can stomach and some hydrolyte but I know its not enough. Any tips??
Poor thing!
It's the dehydration that will knock your supply, so keeping up fluids and resting is the best thing you can do. Other than that, giving you DD as much time as possible at the breast will help bring your supply back up again - she understands this instinctively and that's why she's demanding more of you. I hope you're getting lots of help at home. Can you just spend the day in bed together?
Hope you're well again soon
I wish I could spend the day in bed. My husband has to work today. My 3yo has gone to his grandmothers but I still have my 18 month old so I have to stay up and look after him.
Oh no, gastro is SO awful when you have a baby to look after!!!
Don't stress about your supply, when I had gastro I was SO empty, but when I recovered it just came back easy peasy. Just do what madb said, keep bub at the boob and try to keep hydrated.
Sparkling water hydrates you faster, if you can stomach it.
Hi,
I hope you are feeling a bit better. These things knock you flat, but usually they don't last long. They are serious - and you need to rally the troops to help you look after the children.
More than anything, being so sick skews our perceptions. We are super-sensitive to everything. Generally, if you can keep feeding your supply won't suffer to much. It is just so hard to have another person in such close proximity. Remember, your body will be producing antibodies that will pass through your milk and protect your baby from the illness you have. Take it very easy for the next few days - look after yourself
oh this is just the thread i need right now! DH passed his gastro bug onto me and the last 12 hours have been awful!
all i have managed this morning is half a glass of water and a slice of toast...i guess i should really focus on the water and getting her to do all her feeds
