Used to take EBM, now doesn't want bottle any more. Please HELP

Hi all,

My DD is 3.5months. We had attachment problems from day 1, so I expressed and fed her by bottle. She was fine then, and by a month she was good on the breast, so I had her more often on the breast with the occasional bottle, until about 3-4 weeks ago. I discontinued the bottle as she and I were away for the weekend and I didnt want to carry the pump. Since then she has been fully on the breast. For the last month she's only been on the bottle once. Even then she protested and finally gave in.
Now I've been trying to introduce the bottle again but she screams and cries.
We've tried with DH giving her the bottle and me being in another room so she can't smell me. She still cried and cried and refused it. He tried giving her, and then stopping and getting her to calm down and then trying again but still no luck.

Any suggestions on how to get her back on the bottle?
My main concern is when I have to go for my exercise classes and I cant take her with me. And also will this cause problems when at 6mths she has to start drinking water from a bottle.
My almost 3 year old DS had no problems at all doing both breast and bottle. So this time it's making me very sad.

Hey hun, my little one did this too. She took the bottle of EBM fine and then one day wouldn't have a bar of it. I was recommended to try a sippy cup which she took no trouble at all. And also, I just kept breast feeding her and gave up trying to give her EBM from the bottle.

Maybe try the sippy cup?

I am pretty sure that I tried DD at around 3.5-4 months and she was fine. She actually really loved it because it was something different for her!

It seems that DD was 4 months old, but some of the kind folks who replied told me it was never too soon for sippy cup.

I would try the cup too. My boys were drinking from a sippy cup at about that age. Also, being in another room when your DH tries might not be far enough away. Babies can smell their mum's breastmilk from a long way away. It might be easier for him to try when you are out of the house. GL hun, I know it's stressful.

DS1 started with the pigeon mag-mag cup but by the time DS2 was that age he got whatever was around the house. He seemed to prefer the take and toss cups best - so much for needing the expensive ones LOL!!

I second the 'Take and Toss' cups. I tried a number of the more expensive ones before i tried the 'take and toss' ones, but they are her favourites.

You can also just try a normal (non lidded) plastic cup and hold it up to bubs mouth

How long will you be away for your class? She might be just fine without anyway. And if she's still feeding it doesn't really matter if she won't take water for a while either.

oh dear. i replied and my token had expired.

im away for 2 hrs min. so i give her a feed just before i leave and come back in time for her next. she feeds every 3 hrs.
im going to the bon jovi concert and sat and im worried about it. i might have to ask dh to drive me to the stadium and give her a feed there. it will be her last feed, and hopefully she will sleep through then, until i get home.
i have sippy cup fr DS,i think it's a nuby. it has a soft spout. she seem to take it but then spat out the milk, maybe it's the flow?
will try again.

it will be easier when she starts on solids..

I was recently trying to get my little one to take EBM because i got some work for a day and would be away for a full day. She was basically exclusively breastfed (not really into solids yet) but will take water from a cup or sippy cup.

She was not keen at all no matter what we did. However, she was ok staying with her Dad and waiting for me for feeds. Luckily DH was able to bring her to me a couple of times during the day and she fed then. Usually she would feed about 6 times in the time i was working, but she had just 2 feeds on that day, and made it for it that night and the next day. So, although it wasn't optimal and i would have preferred that she would drink EBM, she was able to hang on until she could drink straight from me.

I feel your pain Prama! I've just had to sell my U2 ticket for this Sat night because I cannot get my littlun to take EBM from a bottle. I've been trying for a month now in the lead up to the concert. I've tried so many things from my hubby wearing a T-shirt that smells of me, to five different brands of bottles/teats. U2 was going to be my hubbies and my's first big night out together since she was born - but alas it was not meant to be. On the bright side - I cherish the amazing breastfeeding relationship that I have with my daughter and that's worth giving up a U2 concert for. She'll just have to hear about it for the rest of her life! If they protest the bottle enough they know they'll eventually get boob. And deep down I think they know that

Blujooce - oh so sorry to hear you're missing out on U2.. aarrghhh. just wait til Matilda wants to go for her first concert, you will have to remind her of U2!!
DH tried to give her a bottle and a sippy cup last night when i was out, but no luck.
looks like this sat, I will have to leave my car at the train station, then DH will drive us to the stadium, I'll give her a feed then he'll come home. And that should be her last feed. I can then take the train home and get my car and come home. so much more hassle. And I will have to tell her this too, when she wants to go for her first concert! and when she has a baby and is BF-ing!!
