Would you buy your childhood home?

We are- well DH's anyway. Dh's mum lives overseas and we are renting the house that they had built when DH was about 12, we are in the process of organising to buy it at the moment. It is not the 'perfect' house for us, but it is a great foot in the door as first home owners, and the best thing is we dont have to move.

As for mine, probably not, I love it and the backyard, but it is simply to small for us all to fit in.

DH and I bought the house my parents built and which I lived in til I was 10, just after my dad died. We have substantially renovated and extended it so it is a wholly new place, but it is lovely being "home"!

In an instant! I was actually a little annoyed as my step father passed away from a brain tumour in 2003 - We were not in close contact at the time after he and my mum seperated I was living in Mt Isa at the time and he didn't want anyone to know he was sick. I flew down 3 days before he passed away when a family friend finally told me. I was told the family was keeping the house (and our dog - he was 14 at the time) however a few years later I was told they sold the property and had the dog put down "cause he was fretting". I was devestated! I would dearly have loved to have bought that house! They sold it to a property developer who tore it down and built two duplexes on the block - In some sort of cruel twist one of the duplexes that sits on the site of the original house retaisn some of the features of the old place which makes it even more painful to look at. If I could turn back time I would do anything to buy that place and renovate it!!!!

I'd love to buy my grandmothers home but not my parent's. Perhaps it's the sentimentality of my grandmothers home and the fact that she died when I was 13 it would be a way of re-connecting with her. My parent's home will always be their home and where I grew up but I cannot image living in it as an adult without them there.

So whoever is living at 7 Woodland Ave in MtEliza better start packing - you have 2 years before I buy my house back! lol

Definitely! I would love for my kids to grow up where I did. It is a beautiful little beach side suburb in Sydney and I loved our house. Obviously most things are out dated on it now but nothing that can't be fixed.

I wouldn't because I have no happy memories of my childhood... I think it would be a negative thing for me.. However, I'd love to buy my grandparents home - my Granddad built it and it's so cute.... It's about 7 hours north of here and I just wouldnt move up that way again...

I was thinking that too. Mine wasn't great (I think I blocked parts out tho), but I grew up in that house, and although there were unhappy times there, I still remember an awful lot of good times there!

When I listen to John Williamson songs, all I can think about is that house. Gets me a bit emotional sometimes, in a good way mostly.

I often wonder if my sister was interested in buying a house, if she'd want to buy that house too! Would it be a bidding war?! lol I was hoping she'd post a response - we'll see!!

omg! I just google mapped the house I'm talking about, and there's another house right next to it, too big for a granny flat! Maybe a big one! oh, totally devestated!

Which one? I lived in waaaaaay to many homes (curse of being a defence family). There were 2 homes I'd live in. Both were Defence homes. Oddly, I'd never buy the one my parents actually built. Oddly enough, one of the houses I lived in as a child is near where I live now and was up for sale when DH and I first moved to Vic nearly 8 years ago... but it is not an ideal location nor was the house in great condition... so no for that one!!!

Love the area, love the house, don't have the spare $1M+ it would cost to buy it...
