Having tubes tied during a caesarean.....

Hi,
Just wondering for those who have had this done if you could please help me out here! Im having this done when i have my c-section and have read some of these things -
I've read that periods are more painful?
The failure rate is quite high - if clamps were used? (apparently they can 'fall off' later)?

What was your recovery like? was it longer than a previous c-section?

Any other helpful info would be fantastic!!

My friend had this done 6 months ago, and just miscarried her 8 week old bub - apparently the failure rate has to do with the procedure being done with a caesarean, not just if its done with clamps.

As for recovery, she was on constand bedrest for 14 weeks prior to bub being delivered prem, so her recovery wouldn't be the same as yours, so I won't comment on it.

I've had my tubes operated on - right side removed & left side clamped - but due to issues with previous surgeries & infections - not for sterility issues.
I had it done to be able to do an IVF cycle & have an embryo implant due to damage in my uterus, so not quite the same thing!!!

BUT!

I can tell you from personal experience though that yes, your period is more painful (well, it has been for me).
My specialist did warn me that it would be likely - I won't explain exactly why because I don't have a medical degree & it probably won't make any sense to you explained by me
But he did say that I should expect it.

I have no idea with success rates either, as I was never going to fall pg naturally due to other issues... but I have friends that have had their tubes clamped & not had any worries.

My recovery was about the same as a c/s - but I didn't have a c/s at the same time to know if it would have been longer with both IYKWIM?

my recovery rate was the same as my previous c-sections - but I wish I had never had it done. I have always had horrid AF - but now its even worse. Not that Gynes will agree with this, but there is such a thing called Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome. If I could afford to get the clips off I would! Not everyone is affected though from what I have read and discussed with others. hth

I have heard that due to the high failure rate some hospitals just won't do it....

I had my tubes tied during my c/s in November 07. I did have heavier and crampier periods for about a year but all my periods have come back different after each baby..

Now I have settled into a nice pattern. minimal cramping. My tubes were cut and burnt so as far as I know there is no risk for failure rate this way..

Recovery didn't take any longer as I was already open for the c/s,.. didn't even have tummy cramps. Infact my PP bleeding was gone after 2-3 days..

Thanks everyone for answering me, you've been a great help. The hospital have already agreed to do my tubes. I did however forget to ask them if they clamp or cut - someting for me to remember at my next appointment.
I am going to have it done, i figure while they're in there and its open they may as well - saves me having to go back another time. As for the painful periods - more than a bit scarey (!!) tho it doesnt seem to happen to everyone - and im really hopeing not to me!!!

Ha! Ok, i've changed my mind. After doing some research on the internet im NOT going to have my tubes tied - DH and i have decided that he'll get the snip. The amount og people with the painful periods etc has put me completely off, just dont want to risk it, i already suffer with Gallstones so any more pain just wouldnt be fair!

i think u are wise shell, if i could undo it, i would too. I have read some sutff online too about hormone imbalances etc. my period has definitely become heavier, more painful and longer too. i now get my period for 6 days!! i have really bad pms too that does not go away. i have it a week before and i don't get that happy/horny hormone lift that i used to get with my period.
i also have back pain and 'period' pain in the middle of my cycle, which i am now convinced it due to the c-section and tubal ligation. i feel better reading that i am not alone but i am angry that the specialists in prenatal care did not inform me. the only risk they discussed with me was that it was not 100 percent effective as birth control and that i was high risk of e-topic pregnancy, which is dangerous.
my baby is now 8 months old. i am not depressed, but i am short fused, impatient and teary, like PMS.
has anyone with problems tried to find any help? or had any sucess sorting out problems after tubal ligation?

oh but hon..they can grow back together and heal after a year if your un/lucky appartently

I had my tubes 'clamped' in 2003...had terrible pain for a year and a half which included clotting, pulling on my right side, feeling excessively heavy in my womb region, BH tightening pain plus stabbing pain when AF and at Oing time. I also fell pg 3 times and m/c every single one..the first being at 11 weeks, the second at 6 weeks and the 3rd at 5 weeks. I went and booked in a reversal due to it and had it october 2005.

I went on to have 2 more children and with my last c/s I had part of my tubes removed. I have had NO PAIN in comparision to the clamping. there is a 1.2% chanch of the tubes growing back together but its a chanch I am more then willing to take. And really what in life is 100%?

ah see thats what I don't want to read. but in all seriousness I have read your body can heal itself same with a vastectomy.

Another pg wouldn't upset us. It isn't in our plan to have another but we figure if it happens then it happens. This was just our choice for contraception over the pill or condoms as my Dh didn't want me putting chemicals into my body for however long it took me to longer be fertile kwim?

I did enquire about this while PG with my 4th. I thought if I needed a c/sect then I could get it done at the same time and my OB refused. He quoted a 1:100 chance of the tubes rejoining if done at the time of a c/sect but a 1:600 chance if done 6 months post PG. It's due to everything being bigger and swollen due to the hormones and being stretched by the PG

OMG, all this info is so interesting.
I feel we were so illinformed about the tube tying. we didn't even know it was an option during the c-setion until 39 weeks and then the ob didn't discuss it with us. I was so tired of being pregnant (huge belly this time) i was just focusing on ways to bring on labour and avoid a 2nd c-setion. so i didn't reserach it. then, as I was off my face on gas and air, and with epidural, the doctors tried to explain things to us about the rates of failure if done in c-section.

the scary thing is not knowing if they have grown back. i don't even know if my tubes are cut or tied. i feel like i have lost control of my body... if that makes sense.

aussienic...we chose tubal ligation for the same reasons too. we have four kids and we can't afford any more! gees! another pregnancy would devesate us cause we couldn't have it. and my mum and sister have/have had endomitriosis, which some pills can make alot worse.

how do you find out if your tubes grow back together? pregnancy the only way? i need to do more reading about this.

I was also planning to get my tubes tied when i have my 4th c-s later this year and after hearing about worse periods on here, i thought i'd ask around a bit more.

It turns out that 2 of the ladys at my work have both had their tubes done...one clamped the other tied....both experience really bad periods as a result, one as Endo and the other has the irregular, heavy & painful periods. That was a little too close to home for me, so i've changed my mind and will leave my tubes alone.

unfortunately my hubby doesnt want to get the snip so we'll be sticking to good ol condoms in future. ( i dont like the pill as it messes me up and i fell pregnant with my first two while on the pill)
