Petrol Challenge - Will you participate?

My car insists on the posh petrol. I think it usually costs about $120 to fill the tank. A full tank will take me from here to Sydney and back - so somewhere between 550 and 600 kms.
That's in normal mode. In sports mode I may as well just slice up dolphins....

We have an 06 Outlander that gets 450-500 per tank. I will not put the cost in though, as we pay anywhere from $1.66 - $2.80 a litre (of regular unleaded). I get 20km once the second fuel light comes on (it gives you a quick flash when it's quite low) and once it starts to flash I have about 1km.

I have an 03 toyota land cruiser. If I fill both tanks it costs me $200 bucks and I get around 800-900kms from it. (if DH gets in it, that's another story.)
No idea how many L that is per 100km sorry! Someone feel free to work it out for me XD

As for letting your car run off fumes, you shouldn't XD you'll start sucking all the crap up in the bottom of your tank and it'll get stuck through your fuel lines and make your car run like dogs balls.

I drive a Mazda 3 and it loves to tell me how economical it is. Apparently since i bought it, it averages 9.6L/km. Saving Dolphins.
I can get an extra 100 (yes one hundred) kms after the fuel light comes on. It comes on at about 450kms. That annoys me.

I drive a WRX STI and it demands the 98 octane stuff. I run it till just before the fuel light comes on (never get it to empty as it can cause damage) and it costs me around $65 to fill up. That gets me around 360-380km. DH gets less mileage out of it as he drives it fast enough for the turbo to kick in whereas I apparently drive like a Nanna. LOL

I have seen the low fuel warning come on - which gives me about 40kms to re-fuel.

I also get a 'very low fuel' warning which gives me 5 kms to re-fuel. Admittedly I've only seen that one once .

I know mine is coming up due for a service, not by the kms travelled or by the ideal date but by the way it is handling/sounding at the moment, it also helps that an x-bf was my mechanic and rang me while I was driving last weekend so he was able to tell by sound that it was due soon for a service.

That is something that I do regularly, get it serviced and I'm very mindful of the tyres and probably get an alignment and balance every 6-12 months depending on how much driving, my car got new tyres in December.

I actually did this in the little Pulsar last week, and managed to get 10 point something per hundred k's 10.6 maybe. I got just over 400 k's to the tank. It's an auto, so not all that economical. (Manual, same car can get 600-700km per tank)

The reason autos are less economical than manuals is the fact that they (usually) rev harder between gear changes, thus using a bit more fuel. And often, they have one less gear than the manual equivalent of the same vehicle. Ie, the Pulsar I drive is a three speed auto, where as the same model manual is a five speed box. Travelling at 100km/h, it does make a big difference.

Helle, I was going to say that about sucking up all the garbage when running a car till it's almost empty. The sludge and cr*p that accumulates in fuel tanks is unbelievable. It really is sludge and bad for engines (says me who still does it )

I have a V6 commodore wagon. I think when I put $20 in it its tells me I have around 280 kms. Can't remember & only put $30 in it today, lol.
I'll pay attention next time.

My car averages about 9.8 litres/100kms. We have a 75 litre tank from memory & I think we get around 680kms a tank. I think I'll try regular unleaded instead of E10 next time to see if it does last longer.

Cruise control can make a difference as well. We find the Commodore can be quite efficient when we can just sit on 100kph, if we are stuck behind someone who can't decide if they are doing 90 or 105, the fuel gets chewed up. We are noticing it with the new Swift, it does not have cruise control, whilst the Colt did. With about 3/4 of DH's driving being at 100kph, is makes a significant difference.

Our car costs 80 - 90 bucks to fill up. Petrol is $1.46 here atm. We usually get 500-520kms, only lasts a week though! We do alot of driving. Its auto, ford facon BA sedan 2004. My baby :-)

Okay, back to update, we got to Mildura on one tank of fuel and we travelled just shy of 560kms and had 40kms left on the gauge. That was highway driving all the way in our Territory. We were happy with that.

Ok.....my car is a 07 auto turbo diesel landcruiser and for $50.00 I get 270 kms out of it. I worked that out at about 12.35 litres per 100kms - providing I've done the maths right That's not bad I think, especially seeing I did all my driving around town this week. I'm going to try again on our next long trip and afterwards as well. As BW's dad says the cars do run better and more efficiently for a few weeks after one. I am interested to see how much better it could be

Did our first cruise around the countryside in the new car yesterday (2010 Outlander) and wow...averaged 9.2L/100km and travelled 330km on half a tank according to the trip display (it has avg fuel consumption, range to empty and distance travelled).

Mind you, this was primarily highway driving sitting on cruise control at 110km/hr, but there was a few hills and more than a couple of instances of either DH or I putting our foot down to overtake road trains and caravans.
