We will be entitled to a small amount of Fam TaxA and also childcare benefit and rebate and we wanted to do these all as a lump sum. Do hubby and I do our tax returns FIRST and then put in a claim for a lump sum payout? or the other way round? Thanks

Yes lodge your tax returnes first then lodge the lump sum claim. The claim can't be finalised until the figures are confirmed from the ATO so it is far easier to lodge it all once your tax is done as you know the figures are actually there.

Do you know much about carer allowance BG? Kinda complicated question...

I handed in my part of the forms before the end of the financial year (around mid June), but only have the doctors half of the forms now, to hand in on Monday.

Now I was told there was a lump sum payment & that I should be back paid to the date I handed in the forms. Would the lump sum payment be only a part payment back to when I handed in the forms also, or if approved would I be entitled to the whole payment.

And am I right that I will get backpaid to when I handed in my half of the forms. I'm pretty sure an officer did actually say that, but not counting my chickens...

if you handed in your part of the form within two weeks of initial date of contact, you may actually be paid to your date of first contact.

you won't be paid a pro-rata portion of the lump sum - you either get it or you dont - and whether you get it will depend on what date is used to grant the payment. if you have handed in your part and the doctors bit was the only bit missing, and your date of grant is not until the doctor put in their bit, you have the right to appeal the date it was granted (you can appeal anything really!) given you cant control when the doctor submitted the form (provided you'd actually given them the form in time)

i believe it takes about 7 weeks for any disability/carer assessment to be carried out so it may take a while. they are all assessed by a specialist team who have a lot more clue than the average consultant about the impact of illness/injury/caring responsibilities

what BG said!! If you handed in your claim form within 14 days of the initial date of contact, your claim will be assessed from that date. You have 13 weeks from your initial contact date to provide all outstanding documentation (e.g. doctors reports, proof of ID) for the claim. If you've done that, I can't think of any reason why your claim wouldn't be assessed from your initial date of contact. If your initial date of contact was prior to 1/7/11 and is granted, you should be entitled to the carers' bonus payment - I would guess it would be issued at the same time as any backpay you are entitled to but not 100% sure HTH

Thanks both of you. Specially on the 7 week processing tip. I'd assumed it'd be the general 21 - 28 days...
Oh well, therapy hasn't started yet & thats where it'll be needed.

TBH - I'm not sure my forms were in within the 14 days, since they didn't tell me that first time around & I had to start again But honestly, I don't care. Long as I can start getting something in the near future, coz it's only going to cover about half what I need... Something is always better than nothing

So much easier here than ringing, being on hold for an hour & having something go wrong needing to hang up!
