I think it will come in handy for us. Just to pay off our credit card.

Those who dont think they need it.. give it to charity! Im sure it would be very welcomed there

Ive been reading the comments re this on the news website. I think alot of people have missed the point of this money being given. Its not just a "here have some money" thing.. it is to get more money back into the economy. People with kids need it the most.. as do those buying their first home. I think Kevin Rudd is doing such a great job. Least he's putting the money back into Australia and not giving it to all his buddies overseas!

I don't think it matters to our family - I don't recall getting that payment from C'Link? I think I would rather it be put towards hospitals - especially maternity - cos i think its awful that you are out in 24 hours (and you don't want to be!!)

but yeah, I don't think we get it, even though we earn wayyyyyyyyyyy under $100k!!

This is a good thing for alot of people but shame the govnt isn't putting some of that $10Bn towards our cr@p hospital systems.....ie more beds....maternity services/support etc for women whilst in hospital

couldnt agree more! But i think it comes down to the budget doesnt it? We wont be getting any money even though we work our a@#$% off and sacrifice a heap! I can totally understand the mega rich not getting it but we are just middle class working family and seem to miss out on a lot! i hope pepole spend it wisely, i am sure the majority will! I hope to it will help out alot of stuggling families and pensioners to get by! Just my thoughts

The money is coming out of the $22b budget surplus, so in one fell swoop they are going to practically give away half of it, because even what they get back in GST (which is only going to be $100 per child payment) wont make much of a difference, providing it is even spent in the first place. And it could be up to a week before it is actually confirmed as it will have to get approval first. So it could be knocked on the head yet.

beatrix, it's very possible today would be the date they base it on - for all previous bonuses (carer bonus etc) it's only paid for people that qualify for that bonus on the day it's announced (usually budget day) - so it sounds about right that it would only be for parents with FTB children as of today

fwiw - ftba can be paid up until a "child" is 25 if they meet certain criteria...

Oh boy I really could do with it to go towards so much. We are paying of a house,car,credit cards and it will come in handy for Mels schooling, dancing, her trip over seas for year 11 that we are trying to get $6000 for. Callum and Liams schooling and just for some savings and as kell said pay some credit cards off. Im very excited about it. Well done Keven.

you know Jed and I were talking about this when he got home.
I see how many people would be woo hooing it and others would be pi$$ed cause they miss out on it...but really who gives a boo hoo.

He's giving money to the old age pensioners....these people helped make Australia what it is today...so many of us are from rich, international heritage and forget the work, pain and sacrifices these people made only to be put on a smiggen of what they gave to give us the Australia we know. They worked back before there was a thing like superanuation and workers rights. they worked when the wages were shiat and your boss could sack you for farting on the job!

i think thats it great that the government see's that these people are living of a smell of an oily rag and are giving THEM a much needed lift in their twigh light years.

As for the people who arent so well off receiving money this time round...i am one of them. My husband works dame hard hours....and makes $50k a year....I work from home to provide a stable enviroment for my children. I also have to give my 9 month old pyhsio every day (now only 2 times but hey it was 4) and I have an autistic son who doesnt make my life very easy on a good day...so anything that the government gives me $$$ gets put back into resorces for my children, may it be books, aids ect.

Dont brand all lower income earners with the same brush...we work hard even if we dont make the big bucks!

Maz I was just thinking about how much OT I could get Matilda with that $$, so that she could have a better chance at school. And we can do the swimming lessons I am supposed to get her in for her low muscle tone... so yep this $$ may help her prepare for school and I think thats pretty important.

Yes well for WIW, my DH works 7.30am til 5.30 pm, often leaving between 5 & 6 am then getting home around 7 - 8pm as a shearer & still only makes around $50k a year.
He's not a speed shearer, & might be able to make a bit more as time goes on, but that is our only income besides my little bit off centrelink. (Around $200/fn). I also occasionally get Parenting payment as DH's work rely's on the weather. As we all know it can rain for weeks on end at times, which means no income for us. Even if there is a day or 2 clear they still can't work as the sheep & roads can take a few days to dry out.
So life here isn't easy. From what I've read we get a hell of a lot less than the majority of people here.
We do pay alot less rent ($150/week), but the rest of our expenses are the same if not more. Major medical services for us are 2 hours away. Major shopping centres for us are 2 hours away.
You have no idea how much this money can help us & other people in our position out.
I have no credit cards, or loans as we have no steady income to be eligeable. So we have to save for our appliances, cars etc.
As Kristy J said. If you really don't want it or need it, I'll quite happily take it off your hands! Not that I would expect anyone who gets it to give it away!
