What would this mean?

I have made an appointment for someone to see Lily about her recent behaviour. They are coming to the house and i take it they are some sort of child behaviour psychologist or similar(not too sure exactly because the referal was given by her speech therapist).

Anyway they ring me yesterday to make the appointment and it is made for next Monday. She said though first they will need to do an occupational safety check. What does this mean? She didn't elaborate and i didnt think anything of it until i got off the phone. To me an OH&S check is to see if i am fit as parent and our home if ok for our children! This is not what i had in mind when wanting to help Lily with her behaviour. It's not like they are DOCS. I'm so scared now and worried they will find something wrong and take my kids away I feel like just cancelling the appointment. What has Lily's behaviour got to do with my parenting and our home safety?

I would cancel and get an appointment for a paed.

We had a visit from a similar sounding group for DD (we are in regional WA) and apart from writing up that they thought she had ODD they were useless. I am still waiting (3 years) for them to return my calls with any actual help!!

Best of luck in getting some actual HELP and not more problems!!

I'm not sure if this is the same thing but when I came home from the hospital after having Jack, the midwife came around for the first few days....and they had to an OHS check over the phone before they come.
They asked questions like "do you have any pets?" "does anyone in your home have a problem with drugs/alcohol?" "Is there any violence in the home?" "do you have an AVO against anybody?" "Are there any obstructions in your driveway/path to house?" etc. etc...

I think it is more for their safety, more than anything. The lady asking the questions seemed embarassed and kept apologising, LOL.

I agree with Marlene so don't stress hun - they are government workers I assume so it is to ensure they are safe within your home and boundaries etc and know what to expect.

Did they definitely say occupational safety - or did they say occupational therapist? Cos kids with "issues" see a occupational therapist if that helps any....

Maybe it is like you said Marlene, because she did say the lady would ring me around lunch time before she came.. I dunno.

mmm they won't send someone to your home from a government department without an OH&S check. I've had people out, and I had a phone call today from a group that is coming to help with Matilda and they did the OH&S check over the phone. I was asked if there were any court cases going on between us, and then about smoking, drugs and animals.

She kept saying that because it was a government funded agency that they had to ask that.

TBH take what you can while you can, we can have a big chat on Saturday about what we have been going through and our girls can scream till their little hearts are screamed out together.

I work for the DHS in Victoria, and visit aged care clients in there home. I do an OH&S check over the telephone before going in, and then again when I arrive. Ring them back and ask what it is all about if you are concerned.

Most of it is to ensure that I am going into a safe environment, and minimising risk to me, or anyone else I employ to go in after me.

Marlene is correct an OH & S check is the norm when the come around to your place for a visit, they`ll ask who`ll be there with you, animals, any safety issues, drugs/alcohol, there`s a number of other things as well but I can`t think of them right now. When it first happened with me I was a bit like you T wondered what it was all about but it`s just the norm for them to have to do a OH & S check nowdays.
