Re: 4 year old kinder 2014 Chat

DS1 actually admitted today that he gets tired in the daytime. This is huge as he flat out refuses to rest during the day despite being soooooo tired lately...his teacher pulled me aside earlier in the week to tell me he doesn't like to rest at rest time there! Not sure how far we'll get, but I'm going to try (again) to enforce a quiet time at home. Any suggestions for quiet time/wind down/relaxation activities? TV doesn't work as he's easily scared by what's on - even shows like Peppa Pig have him running to hide. Reading could work, but he won't look at books on his own.

how has attendance been at your kinders the last couple of weeks? Wednes we had 10 kids, friday only 7 (out of 19). i know the long weekend, and kinder finishing late friday might have been a factor, but just wondering if maybe there is something else going on? Or are kids just getting tired everywhere, and parents giving them a break?

I think it's been ok at ds' kinder. I did duty last week and I think 24 of the 27 were there. A couple went on holidays but they were back this week and a few have been sick. we have 2 days that start at 8.15 and those days seem quiet sometimes when I do drop off but that's cos some kids come a little late to fit in with school drop offs.

Jleigh - how's your little guy going? I forgot to reply when I first saw your post, sorry. Would he do something like pasting or drawing as a quieter activity? Or a sticker book? Sometimes I just put the kids in the car and just go for a drive so ds will fall asleep. He's not likely to ever rest at home but a once or twice a week car nap helps a bit! Or would he rest while listening to music? Something calming? Or at a stretch a musical type of dvd/show? Would the wiggles be scary?

Re: 4 year old kinder 2014 Chat

Pretty much all the kids have been at dd's kinder for every session. I know a lot of kids were out from local schools at times over the past couple of weeks due to gastro though - thankfully it doesn't appear to have hit the kinder and the worst is past. Is it possible something like that is going in down your way too?

Dd has had persistent colds since starting kinder. I know we were expecting her immune system to take a hit given she hasn't been in child care before, so I'm not bothered by it. Just a bit sad for her really.

We have received our fundraising schedule for the year. Looking pretty full on! For the first time ever I'm glad my brothers kids are older and their schools do next to nothing fundraising wise. I don't feel guilty turning around and hitting up the family the same way we copped it for years for all their kids lol

Out of 14, I reckon possibly only half would come. Or you could just invite one gender. Parents definately stay, I think.

Personally, we aren't doing a kindy party this year. By the time we invite family and closest friends it is already at the 30 people mark!

PS Hi, my DS1 is in kindy in QLD. I've been reading this thread with interest.

Maybe ask the teacher who she plays with. I think invite them all if you're happy to have that amount, I would, or invite just the girls like friends of mine have done. 90 minutes is pretty usual and I would say at this age parents would hang around.

Re: 4 year old kinder 2014 Chat

We invited three from kinder for DD1's party. We are having it at a venue that can accommodate 10 kids and once our family kids are counted, we had space for three more. I'm guessing parents will stay.

We're doing badly with getting there on time in the mornings! DD1 has an 8.30 start twice a week and a 9.30 one which we make. She takes forever to eat her breakfast! This week has been especially bad as I have a cold too and haven 't been as strict with getting up with the alarm!

We only have one more session and then we go away. Taking cupcakes in to celebrate DD1's birthday. I can't believe the term is just about over. I went and got paperwork today about school enrollment ! This year is going to fly!

Re: 4 year old kinder 2014 Chat

On a group of 14, if you aren't at a venue with limited numbers, I would personally invite them all. Nothing worse than a small group and you miss one of the kids on the "fringes" of all the little groups, and they hear about all the parties but never get invited themselves. Honestly, I'm struggling to not just in invite dds while group (I can't justify it given there are 27 kids) - I just don't want to see a kid hurt cos they think they are friends and don't get invited.
As it stands there are probably half a dozen names that crop up after every kinder session. And that her dad says are drawn together every morning. But I'm planning to do what was suggested and ask the teacher who she plays with through the day just I make sure I don't miss anyone. We Are fairly lucky in that we have a large house and yard and so far, have had decent enough weather every year for birthdays (even though she is right on the cusp of winter!) - I figure for 90 mins-2 hours we can make it work Eve of there are ten kinder kids. If it gets too much for the adults that inevitably show up (aunts and uncles and stuff) we have a second living area they can migrate to until the kinder kids leave.

We have a hallway full of kinder art. And a spot in the table that was overflowing with a4 sized stuff. So now dd has an art "folio" - grabbed a display folder and anything that fits goes in there!

Re: 4 year old kinder 2014 Chat

Oh gosh I think I haven't been late once so far! We moved during the xmas holidays and now have 20 mins of highway driving on a good day to get to the kindy. He starts at 8:30am and we have to leave right on 8am to get there on time at that time of day. We didn't want to change kinder so thought we'll put up with it for the year...it is getting a little old already though I must admit.

Re: 4 year old kinder 2014 Chat

We are never late! Often we are outside the kindy 10 minutes early even though we only live a 5 minute drive away. I make lunch the day before and I have the bag packed ready to go. It also helps that I don't need to shower as I go to the gym after kindy drop off.

Our kindy doesn't like people coming onto the grounds early, so you have to wait until the start time to go in. Is that a common rule? Working parents normally push it to going in 5 minutes early so that they can dash out the gate as soon as it officially "starts".

Re: 4 year old kinder 2014 Chat

We have an extremely large family and if DD had a party with family + kinder kids, the kinder kids would get lost in the group and DD wouldn't even see them. We did a small party and I said she could invite 5 people (5th birthday) - we ended up with several due to a couple of sibling pairings that we knew both siblings of the family well. We had that party at a play centre and the family/our friends with kids party at home. I asked her who she wanted to invite and encouraged one other invite.

II think whole class parties are too much for the kids but that is just my opinion.

I tell DD that we are friends with everyone but there are some people we like to spend more time with and that's okay.

Re: 4 year old kinder 2014 Chat

With daycare based kinder, is different kids different days, so the whole class party wouldn't work anyway as would be enormous. Last year for 4th I just asked DD for 8 names, and sense checked them with less she mentioned. There were people who didn't get an invite who she plays with, just as there have been parties of some of her friends where she hasnt had an invite. She doesn't seem to care or do others, they just know that you get to go to some and others you don't. This year if have a party will do the same, ask DD for a few names and sense check.

Rinds me - Our kinder has 3 groups that mix over the days e.g red and greens on Mondays and then red and yellows on Wednesdays so a whole class would be impossible - I hadn't thought of the groups !

I just remembered we had a note home last week about the easter hat parade Kids need to make a hat at home before having a parade we are all invited to, that will be very cute to watch! Not sure how interested Moo will be with making a hat...maybe if I give him a stack of alphabet letters to stick all over it...

Re: 4 year old kinder 2014 Chat

changed ideas for the party again lol. first plan of only 2014 kinder kids changed when dd had a party with kids she was in kinder with last year. dd had such fun, she really misses her friends from last year and after the party she asked if we could invite some of them. i am still trying to work out who she plays with at kinder, i spoke t o kinder teacher this morning, and going in early this afternoon to watch and get some names. her friends were more obvious last year bc she talked about specific kids alot more. i think she is still finding her place.

i'm not combining family, i just want dd to have fun with the kids, and maybe help her with some new friendships.

later this week, i am taking my DD2 into kinder and doing a baby bath demonstration. DD will be my helper.
