That is strange! Cant say I have ever heard of it before sorry.
Did the doctor say what in the vegemite he was a allergic to exactly? I wonder if it is a yeast intolerance or something?

Try googling it and see if you can work out what it is he is allergic to - maybe Promite or MightyMight are made differently and wont have the allergen or the volume of allergen in them?

Good luck...sorry not much help...Hopefully someone more helpful will come by! lol

Hope the little man is ok though!

My niece gets a rash from vegemite (9 months) and we have decided it is yeast sensitivity. There really is nothing else particularly in it. The plan is to wait a few months and then try it again. It is brewers yeast - so different to that in bread, but could make her ability to drink beer in the future a challenge if she stays sensitive

did your neice get a rash just on face? i think the fact he had it all over concerns me to try again.

If its an allergy, its normally a protein that is the allergen. otherwise its a food sensitivity/intolerance.
I think its a bit odd that your Dr has said your son is allergic to a product rather than a specific ingredient or food.

How did it happen - i.e. were you at home and you have him son, rash appeared, you went to the doctors and it was diagnosed?

Or had you had allergy testing done, and that was one of the results?

Vegemite ingredients are: Yeast extract, salt, mineral salt, (508, 509) malt extract, natural colour, (150) vegetable extract, thiamine(E), riboflavin, niacin.

Have you noticed any other foods at all that your son has had even a remote reaction to? Have you given him vegemite before, or was it the first time?

Id be thinking its a reaction to yeast, malt or the colour thats in it.

I think Id ask for a referral to an allergy specialist to work out what specifically he is reacting to, that way you can eliminate other foods as well that may cause the same reaction.

    hi there ray ray

well i fed my 6 month old some Vegemite bread and marg he had never had the Vegemite, and to be honest i have not really tried many things with him. i then put him in car to take kids to school 30 mins later his face was red and had rash on it. i was on my way anyway to get him immunized and when i arrived at drs he was covered tip to toe with it that quickly. Dr looked at him and said its an allergy whats changed i said he tried vegemite and she said well thats it.

Squidipa, vegemite has a common allergen in it - preservative 220 - google it. There is a website you can go to to check out preservatives etc and that one is written in red writing and it is recommended to limit, or eliminate it for that reason. I actually started a thread about the same thing nearly 12mths ago when my youngest had a milkd rash reaction after his first time with vegemite. He was fine the second time though.

ooh i knew there was one in there. Sorry Squidipa, I didnt mean to question you, have tickers off at work so wasnt sure bubs age either.
trillian, I wonder why the ingredients list I got didnt have that preservative in it?
Is that the one thats in breads as well? Or a diffrernt one?

yep, it's a big nasty in a lot of things. On my jar of vegemite, it has it as 'natural colour 150 (contains preservative 220)'

eta - this is the website I was talking about alladditives I have been trying to avoid sulphites with Alister cause of the earlier reaction, even though he was fine the second time as allergies can often appear after a culmanative effect. I wouldn't give him dried fruits at all either as there are very few brands that don't use sulphites - even the ones in the health food isle do.

I agree with Trillian.. it'll be the P220. I'm a chef for a child care centre and allergins and sensitivities are always a concern.

We've recently started a 3yo boy who has an issue with P220, so no vegemite for him..and no processed cheese. Like Kraft Singles or Bega Slices. Stick to the proper cheese, if you want sliced, try Mainland.

Marmite doesn't have P220 in it, so that is what I offer as an alternative to this particular boy.

IMO rather than subjecting your boy to the painful allergin tests, try an elimination diet of exluding the P220 and P282 (found in bread). Most bakery fresh bread is P282 free.

Also, most children grow out of their allergies by the time they are 5. I would hold off for a while before trying him again on the P220.

    Hope this helps.

Preservatives are in nearly every processed food item you buy these days. When you next go shopping read the labels and you'll be surprised at how much food 220 is in. Look for alternatives that don't have it in it and use fresh, unprocessed food wherever you can

cottees are notorious for their preservatives...one of them they use is also used as an industrial cleaner...I cant drink the cordial, gives me chronic blood noses.
Cant eat coloured mentos or skittles anymore either, the colours give me migraines.

Glad you were able to figure it out so easily though - good you were going to the dr!

Also yeast extract and vegetable extract are hidden sources of MSG. It is "natural" MSG, so not the highly refined stuff, but nonetheless most people who are sensitive to MSG will have some sort of reaction to it. I had to avoid vegemite for years due to this, but lately I seem a little more tolerant to it.
