My niece gets a rash from vegemite (9 months) and we have decided it is yeast sensitivity. There really is nothing else particularly in it. The plan is to wait a few months and then try it again. It is brewers yeast - so different to that in bread, but could make her ability to drink beer in the future a challenge if she stays sensitive

did your neice get a rash just on face? i think the fact he had it all over concerns me to try again.

If its an allergy, its normally a protein that is the allergen. otherwise its a food sensitivity/intolerance.
I think its a bit odd that your Dr has said your son is allergic to a product rather than a specific ingredient or food.

How did it happen - i.e. were you at home and you have him son, rash appeared, you went to the doctors and it was diagnosed?

Or had you had allergy testing done, and that was one of the results?

Vegemite ingredients are: Yeast extract, salt, mineral salt, (508, 509) malt extract, natural colour, (150) vegetable extract, thiamine(E), riboflavin, niacin.

Have you noticed any other foods at all that your son has had even a remote reaction to? Have you given him vegemite before, or was it the first time?

Id be thinking its a reaction to yeast, malt or the colour thats in it.

I think Id ask for a referral to an allergy specialist to work out what specifically he is reacting to, that way you can eliminate other foods as well that may cause the same reaction.

    hi there ray ray

well i fed my 6 month old some Vegemite bread and marg he had never had the Vegemite, and to be honest i have not really tried many things with him. i then put him in car to take kids to school 30 mins later his face was red and had rash on it. i was on my way anyway to get him immunized and when i arrived at drs he was covered tip to toe with it that quickly. Dr looked at him and said its an allergy whats changed i said he tried vegemite and she said well thats it.

Squidipa, vegemite has a common allergen in it - preservative 220 - google it. There is a website you can go to to check out preservatives etc and that one is written in red writing and it is recommended to limit, or eliminate it for that reason. I actually started a thread about the same thing nearly 12mths ago when my youngest had a milkd rash reaction after his first time with vegemite. He was fine the second time though.
