What would you do? Suggestions also

DS1 seems to have caught the cold/flu thing that's going around, he's 21 months old and this is his first one so not doing to bad, but it seems to have gone straight to his chest. His breathing sound very phlegmy and at times is quite rapid like he's struggling a little but if he remains calm he seems ok. Other than that he has a temp of 38.7C and a runny nose, he's not eating much but having plenty of fluids and despite always being a spewy kid he is keeping it all down, I've been giving him panadol when his temp gets this high and to also sort out any other aches and pains, he has eukybear on his chest and the vaporizer on in his room. Is there anything I can do to help his phlegmy chest? At this point I don't think it warrants a trip to the ER but, of course, I will not hesitate if I think it's getting worse

Sounds to me like your got it all covered, hope you have an easy night and he gets better really fast

The only other thing I'd do is slightly raise the head of the cot so it helps everything drain easier.

I think you're doing a GREAT job! The only thing I would consider is elevating his head if he has a runny nose and to assist with his breathing - most people having difficulty breathing find it easier to be elevated.

If the vaporizer isn't helping much you could pop him in a steamy bathroom to help break up his chest but it doesn't sound like he needs that just yet.

Have you got a 13-health or other 24 hour nursing line in your state? I think that would be the best bet, they will triage over the phone and advise you on whether a hospital trip is needed or not.

We do, health direct from memory, I used it when DS2 was sick a few months ago and the triage nurse forwarded me on to a doctor and she said, from what I described over the phone, that it was bronchiolitis and to take him to the hospital, and low and behold he wad diagnosed with that and was put straight on the oxy. They are best best things ever.

Thanks ladies, I have elevated his head and will continue to keep a close eye on him during the night and seek help if needed. Feels nice being reassured that I'm doing the right thing. Just wish I could take every ounce of his pain and have my, happy, energetic, chatty little man back
