We have done without teething gel for the last couple of rounds of teething, truth be told I've just been too lazy to go out and get some when she's miserable and by the time I do the shopping I simply forget to grab some :/
Mostly just distraction techniques if she's not due for a sleep - bathing is always a surefire way to get her smiling again, she just has so much fun splashing around that she forgets she's in pain, and afterwards she likes being allowed to run around nakie for a while to give her bum some air-time
If she wakes up during the night, I just pop her in bed with us because I'm usually so exhausted I can't bear to spend the time convincing her to go back to sleep on her own (I personally am not a fan of co-sleeping, DH and I are REALLY heavy sleepers and she has fallen out a few times and bumped her head, I'm scared of worse happening) even though having her in with us means I get barely any sleep...
She's able to hold and eat ice cubes now so I find that useful. If not, ice cubes in a sippy cup of water can help soothe sore gums.
Basically, I just let DD get away with murder as long as it keeps her happy while she's teething hehehe - junk food, running around outside when it's too hot (provided she has sunscreen, a hat and proper clothes on!), cuddles and stories when I should be doing housework.... whatever makes my life easier lol
