How long should I let a cough go unchecked?

DS has a had a cough for about a month now. It started with a cold we all had and it's just not going away.
Most of the time he's OK, but if he gets cold (after a bath/ if he kicks of his blankets at night/etc) he ends up coughing up a lung.
It was really wet to begin with, now it's usually a dry bark. I noticed today that he seems to breathing like he's been running even after he's been sitting down concentrating on something for a few minutes.

Could his cold have triggered asthma, does it sound like asthma? I had it very mildly as a child.

I know coughs can hang around for a while but how long should I let this go on for?

Try Baby vicks on the soles of his feet. We get coughs ALL the time alto from viruses. Vicks or baby vicks helps. Do it every chance you can and keep them off their feel til its soaked in bait if you can.
After 2/3 days you should really notice a difference.
If you have a burner, teatree oil helps the body to produce the good cells( white cells i think) to help fight the sickness

I myself would just take DS to the doctor.
It would help to know if there is anything causing the cough, the start of asthma or if its just the time of year and its going around.

I just think it would put your mind at ease too.

Both my DS's have had a cough for a few weeks as they had a virus and then they still had some mucus on their chests but they didn't have any trouble breathing.

I have an appointment for myself on Monday, would they allow me to talk to them about it then or do I have to make a second appointment?

Ohhh sorry Hun. When I read it I put the asthma and the breathing like he's been running together as he was having trouble breathing.

Well trying out the vicks sounds like something good to try!

You could try asking the doctor about the cough though? I have tried at my doc but she always suggests I book an app for DS's so she can check them out.

Sorry I haven't been much help.

That's OK, I should have been more clear
I'll def give the vicks a go.
Wish me luck for the doctor. I don't like the chances though, it's the last appointment of the day.

    And you have been helpful

Sounds like my ds and I took him to the doctor.
He said the wheezing and out of character breathing isn't asthma but if he coughs and can't stop to get him into the hospital for some ventolin.
We did two rounds of antibiotics (amoxicillin) and it was cleared up! So I'm glad I took him to get checked in the end!
