    tonsils and adenoids

Hi i am not sure if i am posting this in the correct section.. my ds who is a little over 2, has huge tonils, each time we go to the drs if he has a viral infection etc, it gets noted, so now he has been refered for a 2nd opinion as he may need them removed. he doesnt suffer from sleep apnea, but he is a very noisy sleeper. he also holds his breath a lot, and it takes hima ges to wond down at night in bed, its hard to explain, but u will ehar himhold his breath then release, we have been asked by friedns in the past iof he is ashmatic due to his heavy breathing, anyone elses child had their tonsils etc removed. just looking in his mouth u can see how big they are, and its all the time, not just when he has a cold etc.. but then he has never had tonsilitis to date !

I had my tonsils and adenoids removed when I was 4 years old, but becuase they caused me MAJOR problems with sleeping and breathing.

I think these days doctor's are not likely to remove them unless they are causing problems but maybe get a referal to an ear nose and throat specialist just in case? Getting them checked out by a pro probably wouldn't hurt.

Yep definitely get a refferal to an ENT specialist (ear nose and throat). I had mine out when I was young but they did it more often in those days than they do now.

I know you say he doesn't have sleep apnoea, but some of the symptoms you are describing - like holding his breath in bed - sound a bit like he actually might.

I would definitely go with a referral to an Ear Nose Throat specialist - one that deals with children would be even better if there is one near you. They are pretty conservative about taking tonsils and adenoids out these days, but if they are interfering with sleeping etc. then they may well suggest it - sometimes it can absolutely transform the child, as well, and you realise you didn't know how much it was affecting them.

i had my tonsils out 12 years ago...but iv had alot of throat infections since n my ent specilist told me its because they only 70% away n leave 30% behind and that is what was getting infected. getting them out is not bad at all. i was young though.
sounds like he could need them out...mine where taken out because id had tonsilitis from the dec to may continously .

thnaks guys, last night we timed it, and it was appr 40 mins, before he stopped the heavy breath holding to drift off to sleep. its like he holds his breath then you hear this big release were he lets go as to speak, if that makes sense .. and its so noisy.
