    Sacral dimple

Any one else have a child with a sacral dimple? DD2 has one and we got referred for an ultrasound. I don't know much about it. Thanks.

DD2 has a pretty deep one, freaked me out, I think I posted about it when she was NB. She has a reeeeally high bum crack too! lol
We were never referred to an ultrasound or anything though, she is quite healthy. Just have to make sure I wipe her bum really well and keep it clean and dry.
Apparently it can be a symptom or indicator of spina bifida a few posts said, or can be just totally normal.

I hope all is well, I know none of that is probably any help, but thought I might post so you don't stress - it can just be a dimple.

I have never heard of it but now you've said it I do believe I have one...lol...when I was in labour with ds1 and had my bum up in the air on all fours the midwife commented on my bum dimple....has me all curious now as to what it means....by the way I am perfectly fine :-)

Yep, both my girls were born with them, but we've never had them commented on.
They were both very hairy in that spot too. I was worried about spina bifida after having worked at the kids hossy but my paed with DD1 assured me she was fine.

They will be sending you for an ultrasound as they must not be able to see the base of it, so they are checking for neural tube defect, and can't remember complete link can be indicator of a kidney issue. Very rare for there to actually be an issue and generally it turns out to be nothing.

    Hope all is ok

    Sacral dimple

I'm glad you had a giggle cos I did too when I pictured myself back in that position, in lots of pain and thinking who gives a $&@" about a dimple I didn't even know was there when I have this burning ring of fire to worry about :-)

MY DD was also born with a very deep one that they couldn't see the bottom of. We were also sent for an ultrasound of it, as when they can't see the bottom they are afraid it could been tethered to the spinal cord, which can impede walking. Her's was fine, it is very very rare, and the paed also told me it is not the same as a neural tube defect in that a lack of folate causes it, it is quite common and there is nothing anyone can do to prevent it (I was paranoid missing my folate sometimes when pregnant caused it).

The ultrasound took around 5 mins, and they gave me the answer on the spot. I think we did it when she was 3 or 4 weeks old.

You can still see it on her now, it's a little weird but plenty of people have changed her and nobody has noticed unless I point it out. It is so small it's not like you can clean it, so other than washing her skin like any part of her body, there is nothing special I do. Never had any issues with any infections there or anything. She is 4 now.

    Hope that help

I have one. It can be a link to spinal problems, so I've read, but I'm fine! None of my kids have it...
Just another one of my quirks

My DD has one. Hasn't meant much to us, at 7 weeks it was observed to be "blind" so no ultrasound required. We've been screened a little more closely for NT defects this time, but that's about it really.

My two youngest have a dimple, ds2 is quite deep... But both completely healthy its very common to have a dimple if you google 'spina bifida occulta' you'll find some info about what the others were talking about, its really quite far removed from what people usually associate with spina bifida. FWIW I also know of a woman who had 8 children with spina bifida occulta and NONE of them had any developmental issues or delays! Hth

I have one too that I didnt know about until I had my first baby!

The only issue I have with mine is that sometimes it gets a bit tender. And a couple of other things that are only an issue as an adult. My eldest has one but the other two kids dont. He doesnt mention it so I dont think it causes him any issues.

Our DD has one. The creases on the back of her legs didn't line up either. We had an u/s to check out her hips and the GP isn't concerned about her dimple.
THe mat health nurse started freaking out about both and mentioned spina bifida and and and.....I'm really glad my GP is a bit more relaxed about it all.
This was after I had a high risk down's pregnancy (1:24 risk) and the bowel was echogenic in the 16 week scan we had, so off to see the genetic counsellor to rule out cystic fibrosis. OMG...having babies is really scary!!!

Lachlan has one that we found out about it when Ashton was born. A nurse was changing Ashton and said "oh his sacral dimple is deep" she looked and then said "Oh it's okay I can see the bottom of it" and then I thought 'hang on Lachlan has one of them' so when I was discharged I went home and checked Lachlan's and I couldn't see the bottom of his.

Went to GP who referred us for Ultrasound and the Ultrasound was inconclusive as to whether it was tethered or not. GP wanted us to have an MRI but he had to be sedated for it, so we said no. He said if he ever grows up and has issues with his running or anything like that to come back. It sometimes crosses my mind when I do see him run, not that he runs weird or anything, he's just so slow for a kid his age lol. He is now 8.
