    Teeth update..

I can't remember where I posted this about Iain teeth but will post here to update a little.

I was concerned about the brown staining across the 4 top teeth. I noticed it starting at about 12 months. It slowly got more visible. I spoke with a dentist who told me it was early childhood caries because he was breastfed. Of course I scoffed at that suggestion. I was then told it was because we are on tank water & no fluoride in the water.

FINALLY I got him in to see a pead dental specialist who says it is actually a developmental issue. She things that early in my pg I could have had a cold or similar that disrupted the development of the teeth buds, She says it like a time line etched into his baby teeth, like the rings in a tree.
Says Nothing I can do, but have them cleaned regular to minimise the staining that is attracted to the defect in the surface of the tooth. She said his teeth are actually very healthy & there is no sign of cavity's or anything like that. Just said if it becomes an issue for him when he is a little older we can have a white coating applied to hide the marks.

It makes perfect sense. From what I have read the baby teeth buds develop by 6 weeks. I was really sick with a nasty throat infection at around 5 weeks. I had a temp of 40.9 & was just generally pretty ill.
So it would have been that I think.

Is funny too, because Iain also had hernia's & funny ear crinkles when he was born. I wonder if its all related to that throat infection!?

I'm glad that you finally have some answers and that Iain's teeth are healthy. Like the dentist says, if he is bothered by the staining when he is older there is a lot that can be done to improve the appearance.

I had a terrible throat infection when I was b/w 5 and 7 weeks pg with my DS. I also had sky high temperatures and eventually had to take antibiotics to treat the infection. This is the gestation at which the renal system is forming. My DS has serious renal problems, in fact he only has one kidney - the other one is simply absent and his urologist believes it was likely destroyed due to my the infection. The kidney he does have has many abnormalities... but it is functioning (for now and hopefully for ever!!). We were informed of the renal problems when I was 20 weeks gestation. The doctors told us his kidney appeared non functioning due to the severe abnormalities and that it was therefore a 'non-viable pregnancy'. We were advised to consider termination.

I wish I had never developed that bloody infection, sometimes the Mother Guilt is overwhelming!!

Yep, a woman's immunity is supressed during pg so that her body doesn't attack the developing embryo - but it also leaves us open to outside infections! I remember being sooo sick with that throat infection, too. Wonder if we had the same nasty strain of throat infection??!!

My DS is 5 now and has no issues apart from his renal probs. I'm sure your lovely Iain will be the same!
