Must have been the days for it. I finally took my little guy to ED last night after 48hrs of temps over 39. They reckoned it was viral and sent me home to continue what I was doing....even though they said he was really sick and needed to be there

Kim- I hope that your little man gets better. This was the first time DD has ever had a fever temperature and it was scary. Let us know how he goes.

Arrrhhh! the temps back! 38.7degrees, Just gave her some paracetamol and have put her to bed again with the fan on her. Just have to keep doing what we did yesterday.

Oh no. Perhaps a trip to the GP won't hurt just to check her throat, ears etc. My DD1 also had high temps recently and had tonsilitis. Had to have AB, then I got pharyngitis and DD2 also had high fevers. All on AB. Maybe see by Monday. A fever normally clears within 72 hrs. Keep up the good work.

Hey there Alibaby - it sounds like you are doing a great job there.

I'm going to second what Mother Goose told you - you don't need to worry too much about trying to control the fever, it won't hurt her, and it's actually an important piece of information for any doctors or nurses who happen to be looking after your little girl. Panadol and nurofen are good for relieving pain, but treat the whole fever thing as a secondary benefit. Give her panadol or nurofen if she is really whingy or unsettled, but if she i happy with her fever, then don't worry too much about it.

Given she's had a couple of quite high fevers over the last 36-48 hours, I think it would be a good idea for her to be seen by a doctor as well, for a good look at the ears and the throat. Fevers in children, though, are almost always related to viral infections, though, and as such, you may not need to give her any antibiotics.

If you are going to give BOTH panadol and neurofen, the current recommendation from Melb's RCH (and I'll explain why) is to administer BOTH at the SAME TIME and then to repeat at the longest interval (neurofen is 6hrly, panadol is 4-6hrly, so give at 6hrly). They say to do this because they are two very different medications which target different receptors in the brain. If you stagger the administration, it confuses the brain and actually cuts off the first medications receptors. For example, if I gave panadol now and in two hours neurofen, the neurofen would stop the panadol signals from getting to the brain . This means you're cutting short the effect of the panadol. Did that make sense? If not, I'm happy to reword...

That's very interesting, as the guidelines from the NHS are to stagger intake of drugs as both will have an effect on her fever. Hmm, I think I need to do some research into this. As I said this happens to boytwin a lot and if there is a better way to control the fever I would like to be doing it!
