I normally give them 48hrs for a temp to come down before I go to the Dr's unless they have that terrible tonsilitis breath or are holding their ears then I go sooner to get some antibiotics. I normally wait until after seeing the Dr to give them some panadol unless they are miserable then I give it to them before hand. For children a temperature under 38.5C isnt too worrying. I find nurofen can work better with temps than panadol, and check with your chemist but panadol and nurofen can be given at the same time for a short period of time
Big things to look out for are dehydration, increasing lethargy and sensitivity to light
Thanks Sararose. They have both gone back to sleep. DD1 threw up her drink and has not really eaten anything since yesterday morning. I could not even tempt her with a bikky. DD2 has still been eating and drinking. Now that you have mentioned a few things to look out for I am really glad I am going to the Doctor now. DD2 cries evrytime we go in her room and I turn the light on and she has wanted to do nothing but lay around and she is not the keep still kind of baby. So my tired brain was not seeing these other signs.
The RCH in Melbourne now recommends not treating a temperature under 39C with Panadol (or Nurofen). The increase in temperature is not only an indication of infection (viral or bacterial), it also helps to destroy the infection by creating a hostile environment. By reducing the temperature pharmacologically we are only masking the symptoms and interfering in the bodies own defence mechanism.
Having said that, 3 days is about my limit, glad you have made an appointment at the doctor's. Hope your girls feel better soon.
give them panadol if their temp is up. dont wait for the doctors appointment.
ETA - the doc is still able to check them out even if they have had panadol. i work in an emergency departmet and one of the biggest things is parents not giving panadol because they dont want to "mask" the symptoms. dont worry the doc can still check whats happening whether they have a temp or not
Been to the Doctors. I did not really get any answers.I ended up giving DD2 panadol at about 11am, she was so hot. At the Doctors DD2 temp was up to 39.5. I have to get urine samples to rule out urinary infection. He did think possible Roseola so I have to keep an eye out for a rash but otherwise just to let them rest and ride it out. I gave DD1 a half dose of nurofen, her temp was 38.9 at the doctors. She is now watching a DVD and DD2 is asleep again.
Seeing my girls so down is horrible, at least it is a rainy day siuted for laying on the lounge all day cuddling. Thanks again for your replies
:-( I hope your girls feel better soon. My wee grandson (7 mo) was hospitalised due to a UTI - they thought it was menigitis (?) at the start. Keep a close eye on them & if anything changes for the worst or they aren't improving, consider a second opinion
