    Surgery for umbilical hernia

When my DD got her 12 month needles i brought up her belly button again. IMO it hasnt closed at all. Sometimes it sticks all the way out and when i push it back in im pushing stuff back in, she doesn't seem bothered by it but i am.

The GP i saw wasn't who i usually see but he said if its going to close it will do so in the first 12 months which is not what i have been told by numerous doctors but hers most certainly hasn't changed since she was born. He said it won't hurt her she may just get teased because it pokes out so much and my mum said she had one and she had surgery because she was too embarassed to show her belly and kids teased her.

I have been given a referral to see the senior pediatric (sp?) surgeon here in canberra basically if he thinks she needs surgery she will have it. If its up to me to decide i'm not sure what i will do, i know its not hurting her but on the other hand i don't want her to be different from other kids.

I'm not the only person to notice, or DP we have had friends and family point out how funny her belly button is. She plays with it constantly

No harm in going to see the surgeon. You can then get his view and decide if you want surgery then.

She will get over playing with it. She's only little. I agree with FF, no harm seeing the surgeon and see what he says. They're all different.
In a former life I used to work in theatre at the Kids Hossy usually in general doing lots of hernias. Most parents choose to get it done for cosmetic reasons. We generally did them over 18months but that was a long time ago.
My DD has one. It's gotten less noticeable as she's grown. She's 5. I never planned to do anything with it unless it caused her pain. It hasn't so I haven't. Can't see the sense in a GA for what is generally covered by clothes anyway.

My DS had surgery for it at 18 months. He was having surgery for something else so he had it done at the same time. His used to bleed all the time. Now it is all good. I assume they have tried the silver nitrate?
Anyway like others said, no harm in going to the appointment.
