Ways to ease coughing at night

DD is in the last stages of a cold atm and has a lingering cough. Through the day she is fine and doesn't cough much, but last night she coughed and coughed, and often ended up either gagging or vomiting. My kids are almost never sick, so we're not overly prepared for when they are. I sent DH out at 1.30am last night in search of Vicks Vapour Rub cause I've heard some of that rubbed on their feet works, but nowhere he went had any left.

So, in the daylight hours while the shops are open I want to be better prepared for another night of coughing... DH, DD and I are so tired.

Does the Vicks Vapour Rub on their feet really work? Or would we be better buying a vapouriser? We're in Tassie and the air is really cold at night which I guess is what is triggering DD's coughing.

    TIA

I've found a combination of Euky Bear rub on the feet and chest, vaporiser and a lemon and honey drink before bed help. I'm not sure which one is the thing that works, but together they seem to do the trick.

We've just come off the end of something similar so I hope you get some sleep.

    Thanks .

Oh, and where is the best place to buy a vaporiser? I'm thinking it might be worth buying one.

The poor little thing, our 2 have had horrible coughs too.

We have a vaporiser which we were using in DS's room but DD needed one as well, so we turned a heater on & put a bowl of water in her room which works the same way.

Otherwise we have given things like Dimetapp or other cough medicines when they were really bad but she would still be too little I think.

Hope you all get some sleep tonight xo

I find chest rub on feet (we use a badgers one and it smells divine) works for ds, but whatever triggers dd's cough seems to be knocked out with a dose of panadol.

We are in the same situation with Sahti at the moment. We put euky bear rub on her feet and cover it with socks - it really helps! I haven't given her a honey drink yet, I don't think she would drink it, but when DD1 has a cough thats what we give her. Otherwise she sleeps in bed with us - for some reason she coughs more on her own than in with me.

Most bigger chemists or Priceline sell vaporisers.

A steamed up bathroom can be a good stand in if you're without a vapouriser again

I have done these when the cough was bad.

Prop up the head of the bed. Either putting phone books under the legs or a pillow under the mattress.

DD2 slept with phone books under the leg od her bed for years

Not sure if she is to young but I have used the plug in type and this helps.

That's exactly what I've used for DD at night. I put the rub on her feet, chest and back.

Good luck and hope you get some sleep tonight.

Keeping the room warm with a heater makes an enormous difference too. We also have a vaporizer but I often find its not needed if the room is warm.

Vaporiser is the best thing in our house. Euky bear rub on the chest works, never tried the feet! Will do.

Brauers cough relief hasn't seemed to help.

We go with a steamy bathroom during bathtime like Clover, followed by some Vicks VR on their chest (never heard about the feet trick though, will have to try!) and we finally make sure their room is warm (not too warm that its sweaty and uncomfortable though). With our two LO's the cold air seems to irritate their little throats causing them to cough as a reaction and lose valuable sleep and recovery time.
My LO's wouldn't drink a honey drink due to the taste of the honey, but some warm watered-down OJ with a little fresh grated ginger, and Bob's your Brother's, Mother's, Aunty's, Uncle's second Cousin!

Edit: We also use the SudaFed plug ins as suggested by Rivlas, but share one between the two bedrooms over a few hours so its not too 'intense' when they enter the room for rest (our LO's are not allowed to play in their bedrooms.)

Hope your DD is right soon Sterla
    xx

It was particularly cold here last night (snow on the mountains and the cold wind that follows), so I think it was worse last night anyway. Doesn't seem as cold today, so hopefully we'll all sleep better tonight. Thank you everyone for the suggestions!

Thank you thank you for all your replies. I don't know what worked... but we had a much better night. Hardly any coughing from DD, and the when she did it didn't turn into a big coughing fit with the gagging and vomiting. The whole house smells faintly of eucalyptus now. lol.
