Would you go back to the hospital?

DS had Gastro a week ago. (co-incidentally after his kindy gave him some other kid's bottle, two days in a row.... when he's on lac-free milk

) It seems it really was gastro though as I ended up in hospital on an IV as I got it, and was badly dehydrated.

Fast forward a week, and DS still has diarrhea. He isn't vomitting anymore, but his diarrhea is relentless. He can't fart without pooing. He wakes during the night once or twice with a massive poo-splosion. His bottom is red-raw, and we've almost used an entire tube of hydrozole and a tub of barrier cream trying to ease his pain. It seems to be helping the rash, but every nappy change is painful for him and it's upsetting all of us.

We took him to ED to have him checked out a day after the onset of his illness, and he seemed pretty much okay, just pooey and spewy. But it's going on for so long, I'm becoming more and more concerned. Just now he woke up with yet another liquid poo. There's always a small amount of........ mooshy stuff but nothing even close to formed. This time there was a little bit of blood in his nappy, and his poo today has seemed quite mucousy. I showed DP, and we both agree that it looks like blood from the outside of his bottom, i.e his broken skin around the nappy rash, but it's worrying all the same.

You'd take him to ED again in the morning, right? So far that's my plan. I think we need to have a poo-nalysis done. My poor little sweetie. Sorry for the total TMI of this post..... there was a lot of poo involved!

Oh no your poor little chookie!! Nothing worse than a red raw bum, he must be miserable

I would take him to the ED hun to get checked over. Poo to the kindy that gave him someone else's bottle! I hope he improves soon

Is he still drinking? Dehydration would be my main concern if you think the blood is from the skin. If he is showing signs of dehydration I wouldn't wait. However, if he's drinking and remaining hydrated and If you think the blood is from the outside I would wait til morning. Saturday night in Casualty is no fun for anyone, so I would avoid it if you don't think it's an emergency.. I hope he's betetr soon and GRRRR to the day care! Twice??? I hope you have put in a major complaint!

Yep, a MAJOR complaint. I even stood face to face with the director and very nearly breathed fire.... lol. Ok so no breathing fire but I very calmly and firmly explained how wrong this was.

He's still drinking like a champ, eating like usual (although we're sticking to starchy and fibrous foods) even laughing and playing so I'm not concerned about dehydration.

NW3 - Definitely looking into that bum cream!

Hope - I could try the sink thing but it's really a logistical nightmare as he's not a fan of water of any depth...... thrashing toddler and sore bum? Ehh... Not sure. On the up side, it's so liquidy it doesn't really stick to his cheeks at all. I just give him a good dab with aloe vera wipes and then straight on with the cream. He always sighs with relief when the cream goes on.

Calluna - Oh, I know. I'm hip with all the rules as my sister is a qualified group leader (studying for her directorship) within the same childcare company! Policy was blatantly ignored. But apparently that's okay. I took it as high as the state manager, but got no response. I stopped sending him with ANY kind of meds, and kept him home if he needed panadol or nurofen (given that he could be seriously harmed if they effed that up) and in the end, when my complaint went unsatisfied, I changed his kindy. He then went to my sisters kindy which was great but once we moved house it was just too far to travel. So we moved him, and this milk saga happened in the first two weeks. So bad. Now he's in his fourth kindy in 8 months because well, frankly....... I'm choosy when it comes to who takes care of my pride and joy.

Yep def go to doctor if not ER. That's pretty bad that the kindy gave home someone else's bottle!!!!! I wouldn't be happy about that,!

Poor little mite I'd take him back to get it checked out. I'll come back on tomorrow with them names of couple of products I used when my DS had a red raw bottom from teething. I still use them every now and then if DS gets a case of diahorrea.
Definitely continue with the hydrozole as it will fight any fungal infection but these will just make it easier to clean him and make it less painful for him.

Also have a look out for Burt Bees Daiper Ointment (I know I know sounds American) but OMG it is sooooo good. It will literally heal a raw bottom overnight. It's pricey at $20 a tube but so worth every squeeze. You may need to google suppliers as they are not sold everywhere.

Tell me about it. Another kindy overdosed him on his oral thrush meds.... then I was treated like "that woman" for being angry about it and lodging a complaint. They didn't even sack the idiot, and he went on to give me evil eye every time I dropped my son off. He also said hello to all the other kids but treated my boy like a leper.

Makes me so mad. DP wanted to punch him in the head. I wanted to let him

Aaaaanyway! Stuff like that seems to happen to my poor little darling. And we get the same line everywhere (the one we got in ICU after the induced coma at his birth) "Gee, stuff like this never happens". Yeah, well, it does to me a-holes!!! All the flapping time.

Hmph. *tantrum*

So yes, ER in the morning I think. Unless he magically poos a nugget overnight.

Wow. That's atrocious! I can't believe he didn't get sacked! I don't know how serious it is with thrush meds but with the wrong medication that could do some serious damage. In QLD 2 qualified people have to sign off on the dosage before its administered exactly for that reason.

I used desitin too. It was the only thing that got rid of DS's rash when he had it bad..

I'd definitely wait until tomorrow morning unless he's really looking ill now, as BAL said, er on a sat night is no fun

As for the creams, I've been told not to use hydrozole once the skin is broken? I use desitin (sp?) cream for nappy rash as its got a much higher zinc content. c
would castor oil help?

could you just dip him in a sink of warm water (easier than bath) every time he poos? it's abit annoying but then Theres no wiping needed and doesn't hurt so much. I did this for dd when she had gastro mixed with severe thrush, seemed to help her not dread the nappy changes so much.

fingers crossed he gets some relief soon. and I'd definitely be complaining about the daycare!!! that's super slack!!

The more nappy free time you can give him.the better.
Cornflour is soothing on bums but a bit of sun and air after each change is far the best.
I'm sorry this has happened. Stupid stupid people. Id be so angry even if he'd been ok. You don't give other kids bottle. Id be making the daycare pay the medical bills too!

Also, stay away from wet wipes for a bit!! Just wet a face washer with water to wipe.

Butterfly - We had some nudie time last night after his bath and to my amusement, he peed on the rug lol. He looked very interested though and was looking at his doodle as it happened... all good stuff for TT! I really think due to the length of this illness it's been gastro, (and the fact that I got it, and spent a night in hospital on an IV because of it) what a coincidence huh? All the same, yes I'm angry about the kindy. They're investigating apparently.

2CheekyMonkeys - That's a good idea. He seems alright this morning, he's down for his nap already but had a massive poosplosion for me at 6.30..... I'm really glad my ms is easing up a bit because it's been a rough time changing diarrhoea nappies and trying not to throw up lol.

As soon as he wakes we're off to the hospital. To be sure to be sure. I've got plenty of pooey nappies for a sample...

Did you initially take your DS to the dr or hospital when he got the Tummy upset from the bottle mix up?
If you saw a dr then the kindly must complete a serious incident report and report it to the department.
I'd be making a complaint to the department too, especially because its a breech of regulations and it happens twice!!!!!

Okay back again

So for pure cleaning purposes when his bum is really sore I used Aqueous Cream it is a soap replacement so won't remove the natural oils in his skin and then used pure wipes to remove. They are alcohol and lint free. They come like freeze dried and you simply add water and it turns into wipe all natural so nothing to sting him. This seemed to make nappy changing time bearable. Lather on the cream and then just wipe off. Cream you should be able to get a any chemist wipes google pure wipes and you will get a list of their suppliers.
