I always buy those 10-pack party tubs of play-doh for the party bags. They are about $10 a tube for the 10 tubs, so not the cheapest, but in terms of value they are worth it.
What about little rubbers like what they get at Smiggles, or bouncy balls, glow sticks are a hit and twisty straws and whistles, or pretend recorders. You can get little rings that squirt water, which also seems to be a bit of a hit with the kids at parties.
S&R went to a 4y/o birthday yesterday, and they each got a cupcake to take home (not the actual birthday cake, but all decorated in the same style). No toys, but that's okay with me too.
I found a greatt website who does party bags or you can just buy the trinkets most of it was wooden stuff like little bracelets, whistles etc, love the stuff I got i bought heaps and have stuff stashed away for little gifts etc
also aust post have packs of steve parish books 10 for $10 I did these in a pass the parcel the kids and parents loved them
we had an activity at dd party last year where i baked some vanilla cupcakes and the kids got to turn them into jelly/lamington cakes.... they dip them in jelly ( not set ) and then roll them in coconut..... they then got to take their cupcake home in a little cupcake box.
