well the op is booked 5th august and my nerves are setting in.

we had DS2 circum at 4 months- he was fine- we just had to keep the bandage on for a few days and then replace it with vasaline soaked gauze that you can buy at the chemist- we just got a big square of it and cut it to size. They gave DS2 an epidural while he was under and he awoke crying for a feed after the op. He had a feed and went back to sleep- woke up again and was jumping around on my knee- no pain noticable! We kept up the panadol for the first 48 hours but he was fine- wasnt grumpy etc at all!

We also had DS1 circum at 12 months of age for medical reasons as well. He was sore, but once again he got an epi under GA which helped for pain as well. He was uncomy for a few days afterwards, but once again kept up pain relief- Painstop and he was fine. Mind you, when he was circum, they had to do a few other things as well, which probably were the cause of the pain more than the circum. We couldnt stop him moving around- even though he had a catherther in for 2 weeks as well beacuse of the other things he had done- there was no stopping him! He was crawling around etc straight away. The only thing we found is that beacuse of the pain relief etc that he received, he got really badly constipated- so just watch that he doesnt have to strain. Benefibre is a great thing to give to make sure this doesnt happen.

Both sons were in sposies, just make sure that there is nothing that will rub against it and heaps of vasaline to stop the nappy sticking!! You should be fine in cloth- cant see why not- just that the vaseline may stain them and you may not be able to get it out!!!

Also there is a cream that I got called Kenacomb cream and if when it looked a bit inflamed, i would whack it on and it would settle it down- its only avaialbe on script but it is the best stuff- its an antu-fungal, anti bacteria, anti everything cream!! Something to keep in mind! You can even use it on cracked nipples!! LOL

thanks det.... yeah i was hoping on using cloth nappies but now im thinking buying some sposies for him how long will he go in sposies? how long till healed he is on an arvo op list so how long will this take they said he wont be staying night. Looks like we will be catching train in and out but ill take my most comfiest pram my coach ride for him.

hun i would say 2 weeks of sposies - we had 2 do vaseline for two weeks here. Boof was done at 8am and we left hossy by 11am - its 45 mins rounf trip from handing him over till he was awake again. Procedure itself only takes surgeon 10 mins- its getting them asleep and sorted by anthetiests that takes the time.

I had a blubber when we walked out of the room. THen DH and I went downstairs and ate Maccas. We were told what time to go back, we went back and waited then were allowed in to see him. It wasn't long to wait.

i went to the loo, had a hot choc and rang my DH- by that time it was time to go back again! Time went quick!

Hi, I haven't read all of the posts here but I wanted to tell you what my DS used while he recovered from his circumcision (done at 6 weeks old). With the vaseline you can buy vaseline...... arghh mental block!!! It's like an already vaselined bandage, OMG I cant think of what they're called for the life of me right now!!! If you go to the chemist & describe the vaseline covered bandage or something similar & tell them what its for they should know what you're talking about.
Anyway, as I said it's like a bandage thats already covered in vaseline so you just buy a packet (super cheap!!) Then cut it into strips to fit your DS's penis & it will do the job fantastically (well it did for us)

yep its called paraffin gauze- had to get it from the chemist- get it b4 op so you have it at home - it comes in a square and you cut bits off as you need it- i just stored it in a snaplock bag in between using it when the package was open.

I would put the gauze around his willy and then big slabs of vasleine over the top- esp the tip so it doesnt stick to the nappy!!

btw we had to leave the original dressing on for 5 days to start with- no baths and then had to change dressing daily and bathe daily for another 9 days. The dressing started coming off straight away, so we just kept chucking more dressing on top to hold it down. Then at day 5 we chucked him in a bath and it just soaked off.
it looks horrid to start with- and you think- MAN what have i done?? But it takes around a month for everything to get back to normal size etc - it swells heaps to start with !

Boof was peeing and pooing as per normal straight away. so that is a sign that they are not in pain.

how do we go with daycare? ops on Wednesday so told daycare he wont go on his two days that week which is Thursday and Friday. what they gonna do is circumcise him then use that skin to re attach to the side of his woohoo to make it straight. So no throw away skin here they are recycling it.

BTW have i said it yet you are being an AMAZING HELP!

Just wanted to say good luck for the op. My DS was done at 6 weeks and seemed to be a quick and easy process...and quick healing, but I'm sure it would be different when they are only small. I remember he came home with the gauzey stuff on it, which had to be soaked off in the bath after 2 days, then it was just slathering with Vasoline till it healed.....which only took about a week.

With your MCN's....seeing as you shouldn't use nappy cream with them, I'd get liners, or just use disposables till he's all healed.

Hope it goes well, and hope that your DS will appreciate that you've fixed his wonky willy at 12 months and not 12 years!

I can't help with the circumcision questions but I can help with the GA. My DS had an operation on Monday and went under GA for it.

Thankfully they medical staff made sure they talked us through the whole process and we knew that the following could happen:

* He could struggle against the GA, arch back etc
* His eyes could roll back
* He would go really floopy really fast.
* He could fall asleep with his eyes open
* He could make some noises once asleep.

They also told us in recovery that:

* He might be disorientated.
* He would most likely cry for a while (DS calmed down after about 40 mins)
* He might hit me because he was disorientated.
* He might vomit
* He might be shaking.
* He may try to pull his drip out.

Although it sounds scary, I found being prepared for all the possibilities was so helpful. no nasty surprises that way.

The good news is that after he was out of recovery, he was back to his normal self really quickly, was was very hungry and thirsty becuase he had been fasting.

I, like you, was really nervous, I cried after I left him in theatre and then again during the op. TBH I didn't cry in recovery because I was just so happy to hold him again.

You will surprise yourself, you will be fine.

eeekkk thats the thing the surgeon dont tell me nothing he is an arrogant jerk (public system) as much as i felt a wave of emotion and tears reading your post ur right i am better to be informed than not at all no one said he was getting a spinal block. See no one tells me anything except you ladies
