What do i need to know about circumcision?

I hope I didn't upset you Squidpa,

I just wanted to share the information I had so that you didn't go in there wondering what on earth is going to happen.

As I said, I was so impressed with how quickly DS was back to his normal self. As soon as the GA wore off it was like it never happened.

hey hun
there are things that can happen when they go under a GA- fortunately these things are NOT the norm- most kids get through a GA with no probs at all. For alot of the behaviours that can occur- there is meds etc that they can do if they do happen- so dont stress to much about them. Just be informed.

Although every hossy has different procedures for GA's with kids , when DS1 had ops at the RCH this is what they did
*sent to a holding waiting room where weight/height/bands put on
*Called us up to pre-op room and put DS on a trolley/bed or cot- dressed for surgery in PJ's. Checked everything and spoke to surgeons last time
* I went with DS to a pre-op room where DS was given gas to go to sleep- I was allowed to hold his hand and reassure him until he was asleep.
*As soon as he was asleep i had to go and he was wheeled into the next room, which was the operating room.
*After op DS taken to recovery. As soon as he is settled, parents are called to go and sit by their child until they wake- any issues waking from GA are acted upon ASAP. DS will still have a canula in at this stage in case any meds are needed
*DS wheeled to another recovery room where they stay until they have had something to eat and are OK to go home- usually have to pee as well before they let you go.
* Go home with follow up instructions etc .

My DS1 foreskin was recycled as well- lol so no wastage here as well.

As for daycare- i would speak to them and ask them if they are OK to make sure that they apply vaseline to his willy for the following days- that will be the only extra thing that they will be required to do differently. He will well and truly be fine to go the following week after surgery

Squidpa, first of all good luck with it all I'm sure it will be fine i have my fingers crossed for you all.
As for childcare, I am childcare worker and a few years back I looked after a 3 year old boy who had bee circumcised he came to day care the week after and we just changed his nappy every hour used plenty of vasoline and some other cream, he was fine running around everywhere and not in pain at all, it was about 7 days after op i think.
Realistically for the staff at daycare it's not much different to applying nappy cream so hopefully they won't have an issue with it.

o.k im stocked up bought some Vaseline and some paraffin soaked bandage's. Ready to go, paper work to fill out tonight need to make sure i have loads of disposables so one nappy an hour right??? Do u wake bubs at night or during day sleeps?? I so hope someone answers me today.

Im feeling very everywhere. Glad its getting done but questioning the need for it to be done. What if's, have come to mind. Im scared and freaking out and upset yet also very calm i guess. Im very scattered brained. I am unsure if im gonna be able to afford all the disposable nappies. How long does he need the Vaseline on? If i use cloth with fleece liners and use Vaseline will this wreak my nappies? hrmm maybe i should post this in the cloth thread. Im gonna pack a lunch to take and i have got lots to sort out tonight like whom is picking up my son from daycare hrmm ill get there just a bit over whelmed you could say.

Glad hubbie is comming with me through this mind you he wouldnt be any where else.

I need to breathe.

how long will he use disposables for how many should i go buy?? just found this answer from det 2 weeks for sposies how often should i change him?

its all good
just get one pack of nappies to get started and see how you go- only change him when you would normall change him. When he soils or when it feels really full. You might find with sposies that you may get more wear out of them. Get huggies as they are fool proof, reliable and dont leak!!! They also absorb the best i reckon and keeping him dry down there is important .

Perhaps if you want to get back into cloth quick is you can use sposies for say 5 days and then use cloth with a materity pad in it so that acts as a barrier between the cloth and the vaseline. The only reason to use sposies is to stop the vaseline wrecking your cloth.

also dont be surprise if it bleeds a bit esp the first day or so. I was feeding boof after the op at home and noticed blood on his outta clothing- it was going through everything as the gauze had moved and its a very vasular area. We just put some more gauze on it and it stopped it. But it scared the daylights out of me. I even rang the docs office and its pretty common.

Make sure that you have some painstop day and or painstop night in the cupboard as well and some nurofen. These meds are all available over the counter. If you can, use nurofen over panadol as the nurofen will help with swelling as well as pain. Use painstop for first 24 hours and as needed and then nurofen if needed after that. Also some salt on hand as well for salt baths after 5 days as directed by your doc.

OH thank you for taking the time to post det i was so hopping you would check and read this.. I have painstop but says not for under 2 year olds so might ask dr today we have iburophen so thats like nurophen right? ill ask dr think il can give him that.

det words are not enough to to say thanks you have helped so much. he has a slight running nose and a random cough took him to dr on monday dr said nothing to worry about it has not worsen so ill check with them today dont want them to do it if he cant handle it today.

Got me some huggies on hand and more if need be, i sorta hope this all happeneds but not if Josiah is to sick but also hope i dont have to go through this anxiety for them to say oh we will re book. Bit of a win loose situation just hope everything goes well. he must of knew something was up he did not sleep well.

he is having his toast and we will make him a big bottle, not milk and food after 7am then ill buy some apple juice on the way for him as he can have that till 11. Unsure if i should get it as i am unsure if he might react to it never had apple juice hrmmmm maybe ill leave it.

yep ibprofen is nurofen and if it isnt working for pain you can always use nurofen and panadol at the same time as one is a paracetamol and one is a ibprofen.

very brief and quick update i am finally home yes finally home after arriving at hospital at 10.30am. We are buggered!

he went off to sleep in 5 seconds with dummie in mouth im so proud.

they did the circumcision and straighten out his winkie the also removed some fibrous tissue that was a lump or something. need to google this tomorrow.

swollen yep it was he started to bleed heaps changed his bum then after that 45 mins later it was like loaded in bloood. He was and is having trouble clotting.

Then they noticed it was going black and swollen turns out he had a bleed under skin that they thought was clotting so i guess that was good. Altho they said that they may need to do another op to remove it, we were moved from day surgery and admitted to have a surgeon take photos and email the propper surgeon he came back from home to check him out. Said he should be fine. He also said he wont bleed again like that in nappy. Got home and yep more blood and im not talking a small spot or two. So changed him but if it hapeneds again im off to emergency.

due to him not clotting no iborephen or nurophen

oh forgot to say they gave him a spinal block think they called it a penile block tho

just make sure you keep up the panadol tommorow- keep him comfy. and if you are worried- ring doc and emergency straight away.

hope you guys get a good night sleep tonite and take it easy on yourselves tommorow as well- you will be emotionally drained!!!!

My goodness you would have been going through this blind not like us as we have YOU! scary indeed.

i have just changed my first poopy and today i was able to have a better look the head looks like there is like a hole in it and im not talking about where he wee's from looks lumpy on one section. Hubbie describes it as it looks indented on the under side of the head, is this what u had?

everything will be pretty swollen down there for a few weeks- it will look pretty hideous for a bit but it will get better. If you are worried give them a call! When have you got a follow up appointment with doc?
