Hello there all you MCN queens !!! I need some help!!!!
I am expecting bub nos 1 and keen to give the cloth nappies a go - done a little reading on MCNs but actually feel more confused the more I look :doh:
"this is probably where a lot of people give up and think it is too hard and go to disposables...right??"
Anyone in the group able to point me in the right direction - websites...forums so i can make a decision and pull my finger out and make a decision on what to buy for bub.
I am thinking of going part time cloth and part time disposable...
I probably will be back at work (3 days) when bub is about 4 or 5 months old..
Thinking so far about - flats/ prefolds when new born and then going onto pocket nappies when older???
Input/advice is very very welcome...
;)Anna

Hi AnnaBelle!
Pockets and AI2s are VERY easy to use, and most of them can go in the dryer. always read the care instructions first though ;) all of mine can. AI2's are cheaper in the long run IMHO than pockets, because you have to pay for the absorbent bits seperately.
There are lots of good brands, but there are some dodgy ones too, and unfortunately when you are new to MCN, it is hard to tell the difference. Nurture Nappies and Darlings Downunder are good, WAHMnaps are good, any member with a shop in their sig is good (if they have nappies ;)) be careful with Ebay, some ofthe worst ones are on there, but there are also some good ones, so ask before buying. ALWAYS if you are using pockets, get more inserts than nappies! sometimes you will need double bppsting, sometimes your boosters may take ages to dry.
My girls are only part time in cloth, but i dont buy the sposies, they use them at childcare. so when they are home they have cloth on.
-
Hi Annabelle - sounds like you have a pretty good handle on things and yes everyone feels the same when they start out but it doesn't take long before your an expert. great sites are the australian nappy network (not sure what the rules are on links anymore) modernclothnappies dot org nappycino dot com are great info site for shopping there are a number in the BB market place and the big stores are nurture nappies, darlingsdownunder, nappy bucket, baby blossom, natures cradle and I'm sure there are some new ones too, I'm a bit out of the loop.
Christy - looking forward to catching up, we are staying northside in Strathpine but I'm armed with a car, GPS and kids who have never expereinced brisbane traffic so travelling will be a fun experience for us all :-)
Not sure who the other brisbanites were - pink palace? My gosh you gals chat so much I've forgot but would love to catch up with you all. Should we try and set a date time now? I'm happy to work around everyone as we are planning nothing but our reunion on the 27/28th September
FJ - fellow cancerian here hugs to you!
Ari has discovered the most revolting thing today! she can reach in the leg area of her nappy and pull out poo! OMG 3 times this evening caught her with her hands in her business - YUCK
Got to go, meant to be studying eek
-
Thanks for the advice on the swim nappies ladies...I will hunt around, maybe just start off with some of the disposable ones and maybe order 1 or 2 MCN ones (good excuse to buy more MCN's while I'm at it ;) )
-
Hi laranna - we had 2 mcn ones but we swim everyday from about Oct - Apr. We haven't used dis with DD but did use them with DS and I can honestly say the MCN ones hold a lot more then the disp ones when it comes to the first 8mths or so and those runny poos OMgosh. Ari has soiled her swim nappies a couple of times and we just rinse them off and away we go again. We have only used the imse vimse ones so I can only vouch for them but they are great.
-
Sarah - will get back to you about you know what
Christy - did you still want some nappies babe? let me know
to tired...Vy being a cow (what eles eis new)
later chickens
-
OMG Maz Vy looks SO CUTE in your ticker!! That outfit is adorable!!
FJ, I have a GK wetback that was seconds in there ozebaby store, it's most excellent. It has a zipper & fits a whole days worth of nappies in for when we are out & about but also folds down to nothing. Highly recommend.
Janie, May be piking on tomorrow, again, myself, feeling a bit cruddy. Will see how I am in the morn, elsewise we might see you next week!
-
Why thank you very mcuh honey!!! Pity she's be a cow the last week! I could send her via AP to somewere ATM.
ANyone bidding on the Ish Flies on Ebay atm?????
-
Just to answer whoever it was that asked earlier today (sorry too many pages to catch up on!) yes the big meetup is defintely on for the 13th September at my place in Langwarrin. Now to get off my ar$e and clean it cos I think its is going to take that long to tidy up!!!
-
Ah, thanks mel, that was me... I just have to find out where on earth Langwarrin is lol!
-
Maz - that sure was freaky about the nurse dying - i'm sure it's got nothing to do with you and the complaint though.
FJ - the baby beehinds wetbag will be fab when you have a newborn, but just for Isla now, i'm sure the size of a jamtots one would be just fine and dandy. I pack the baby beehinds one for childcare (for the day) and use the jamtots one for a morning outing.
Laranna - i recommend the IMse Vimse swim nappy too, but the sizing is generous. I would avoid buying a swim nappy with aplix on it, the aplix snags on YOUR bathers i found. Grrr to that.
Melbel - great to hear from you hon!
Tracey - loving the pics of little Zy! what a stunner he is (still).
Nelle - did you mum see my list of the aplix closing AIO (her request)
Nessa - jade sounds vary vary noice. I have gotten NN FNQ mail very promptly in the past - in our neck of the woods, so i would contact them if i were you, something doesn't sound right.
Alioops - hope your car isthoos improve soon
AnnaBelle - not allowed to post links for you, but to get great modern cloth nappy info and advocacy, google
ozclothnappies
nappycino
Prefolds and flats for a nb sound fine, just make sure you have the waterproof covers, not Ye Olde Pilchers of Eons ago (easy to buy at big w etc but a big waste of money), you'll read all about the new technological advances in MCN fabrics on ozclothnappies and nappycino.
There are other options for newborn/small stage too, like fitted nappies. People start using pockets/aio's at varying ages, for lots of reasons e.g size of nb, shape of legs, how often and how explosively your newby does their business!
anyhoo welcome AnnaBelle, lots of us have either MCN'd a newborn or are doing that right now, you're in the right place.

If I was going to sell some nappies should I strip wash them first?
I don't think I have ever bought strip washed second hand nappies (they always smell like wee ) but I think I would have a guilty conscience selling my smelly nappies. I am going to sun the stains out but wondering if I should strip wash first?
Also what do you think is a good price for Original Magicall AIO's that have been used for about three months (maybe once or twice a week each)? Is $12 unreasonable (gosh I hope this okay, I am in no way advertising mods, just need an opinion)?
WOHB: WhizzKidz Nights with BBH Trifold and Maz-a-licious Skulls Cover.
-
Ash, do what you would finad acceptable for yourself. If you want to recieve strip washed nappies, the stripwash them, is you dont care then dont. and put a price that you would be willing to pay on them
-
Ash I dunno if I would pay $12 for them... TBH maybe go $10 and you'd get heaps more takers. I personally would strip wash them. But thats how I like them ;)
Maz yep!!! I am in need, I keep giving people ones to try and I've got them all back atm and still think I need a few more. Jovie refuses to sit on the toilet, so thats a relief! She keeps telling us when she's going to do something or that she's not finished poo'ing or something like that, but hates the toilet. I hate potty's so we're not going to TT yet....WOOT!
WOHB: no idea, some middle of the night DH combo
-
I agree - probably $10 for a magicall and $15 for BBB/wool covers
thats my usual limit for second hands.
And ofthe 2nd hand ones ive bought i have always strip washed them anyhow.
Saram- christy, melham, pinkpalace, Gudism - mmmm help me out girls any one else close to brisbane for a meet up? Dont make it too late in october or i might go into labour on the day ! lol
Going to try out my ittis today! yay!!! (when DD wakes up - and we go to play at wynnum library for 1/2 hr and read!). Anyone want to join me?
FJ i am the same wanting to get some longies done from shannons pattern but snapped both my 5 and 6 size needles!! arrrrr... need to but more this morning! i might get a bigger size what do you think?
WOHB - Boosted BBB +Wool cover
-
ash - I'm about to list my magicalls for sale as well (the small's) and I'll be listing them for $10.
Pity you girls aren't organising a meetup in early November in brissy, I'll be down there then.
I thought I'd try out a cover from someone on Ebay for Nina. Never again, it looks good enough, but it's soooo small, and it's suppose to be a large. I reckon it'll fit Emily in a couple of months  I should have known better.
-
Jodi - this happened to me too.
I bought a wool bbh cover that was supposed to be large (tagged large) but it was the same size as a medium!
She admited aftewards that she always dried inthe sun! SO no use to me but i swapped it on... told them it was a medium although it said large.
Frustrating when this happens
-
Jodi........we can organise something in November for you.
PP what time are you going to wynnum
Christy........I have some cute tooshies here you are welcome to use

AJP... Waaah dont remind me that Maddy is getting older!!! She's 10 in Nov so still 2 yrs of Primary school... We had her school roduction last night, the Prep kids look so tiny compared to the grade 5 & 6 kids! Maddy is shorter than some Preps though LOL...
Thanks Gigi... How's Bilby doing???
WOHB: BBHB & Motorbike Cover!

lol yes jodi - another excuse for coffee and cake! done
Melham. Will be this morning after DD wakes up. Do you have cooper this morning.?
I am not sure of an exact time but will update! lol
-
PP I have Cooper, going to take kids to school soon, and call into a freinds house but wont be out to long will check when I get back or sms me. ;)
-
oh ok. will SMS you - probably aim for about 930-10am (need to run a few errands first).
-
A meetup for me does sound good :D I have alread organised to meet up with Mel (gudism) and Renee (renstar) while I'm down there, so hopefully we can combine that to a group meetup?
-
that is possible Jodi - is your other meet ont he sunshine coast??
Melham - leaving soon - be there about 10! Meet you inside - bring your knitting needles lol
I am trying out a cute tooshie... strange to put on! but feels nice and soft though!
Will see how it goes... like little pants more than a nappy

-
Thanks Gigi, Alioops & Saram for your advice - will check out the websites and get back to you with more questions!!!
Ali - you got me thinking certainly about the advantages of the A12 nappies also!!
Anyone got opinions on greenkids nappies???
What about all these "starter packs" or should I just go and buy one at a time??
Many thanks
Anna :)
-
PP - I think I have either missed something of there is a big gap in my MCN knowledge... does drying in thun shrink nappies or something?!
-
Gigi there are a few different ways to dye wool. I have used acid dyes (landscape) and steam to set. Others use food colouring, jelly or kool aid and microwave or boil.
-
Annabelle - I love Green Kids for DS - haven't tried them on DD yet though. But I even use mine overnight for him, think they are totally fab. I still want a minky one though, but been holding out... maybe I'll get myself one for DH's birthday.... hehehehehehe
I brought a lot of trial packs, to see what kinds of nappies I like, and that I could try different types. What works for one kid may not work for another too. Bubblebubs aren't great on DS but the ones I have for DD haven't had a problem with....
Had a blow out last night with DD - had a magicall on her - must of been too big in the legs cos she PEED everywhere!! haha!!! DH ended up with wet legs... hahahahaha!!!!! She didn't really appreciate being soaked like that....
MAZ - the clinic nurse today LOVED one of your covers - said it was LOVELY.... ;) Then she took of DD's nappy to find she had done a stinky poo in it... lol
I'm in for any meet up - I don't mind!!!! I can travel anywhere after 5 weeks!!! (Until I go back to work when DD is 12 weeks old..)
WOAB: Widdlewuns
WOMB: Sposie (its all I had taken to the clinic with me!!)
-
Woohoo my BP insert arrived.. so now i will send back the old one.
PP- yep she is making me send it back.. so yeah..
sorry to tired for anything else, having probs with Mjs feeding and yeah so ready to give up
-
Queenmab - wool covers do shrink in the sun!
Does anyone ever use a AIO with boosting for overnight
FJ - the shannons longies pattern - can you do it with normal needles?
-
Don't have anything to say about nappies really (apart from that I STILL love D'Lishes :P), but I saw Ness she's struggling with MJ's feeding - mate, it's a really common 4ish months thing, if she's just being fussy, Silas is driving me BONKERS, always wanting to look around, sucking all wierd, just being an all round feeding nuffer. I think he's becoming more aware of things around him, and wants to see what's going on. Tried to feed him at playgroup today, needless to say, he was starving when he got home only an hour later. :P
-
Oh PP, I thought you were talking about a magic all & I was confused...!!!
-
PP - pray tell: where do I find Shannon's longies pattern? I'm trying to find a good longies/soaker pattern that is simple and doesn't use 50 types of needles or complicated stitches...
Will also ask in the granny knitting section!
AnnaBelle - from someone who has been a student of MCN for the last few months, here is my advice: Buy a couple of different types (All in One - AIO; Pocket; All in two - AI2; Prefold & cover) to test them out. AIO & AI2's take ages to dry, pockets need inserts (that can take a while to dry - but only half the time of AIO's), prefolds are fiddly but work well on newborns (if you've got a good cover - the secret to prefolds!). You will get the gist for what are good brands by discussions on this thread. Personally I have (and like):
Baby Beehinds
Blueberry
Green Kids
Happy Heiny
BumGenius
Prefolds (all sorts!)
Cushie Tushie Minkee (don't like the other sort very much)
For night nappies: Good Night Sleep Tight (GNST - by Bubblebubs) and Sandmans (by Nappy Chappies) are good with a wool cover (instead of PUL which the normal ones are made of) or longies (woollen pants). You have to 'lanolise' the wool to make it contain the wee which means soaking it in lanolin (available from the nappy suppliers or the chemist as 'Lanisoh' nipple cream). HTH...
WOHB - BBB & PUL cover
-
PP, I don't think so, its int eh round which really isn't hard & if you need to buy new needles anyway get yourself some double pointed ones so you can give it a try
-
mmm might need to invest then fj! lol
Well ashley is in bed in her shorties! they finaly dried and i am hoping they work!!! will see i guess
They are a bit big but will be good for her to grow into.
Still need to figure out how to make the waist cast off stretchy to better get over her hips.... any idea girls?
Here are pics of her in her shorties for anyone interested! :)

Nettie HERE It's in her blog post #3. Come chat knitting in there ;)
Hi AnnaBelle :D What Nettie said! I have stacks of different ones and have only gone back for seconds or thirds of the ones I really like. As with anything what suits one won't always suit someone else so take it all on board when you make your decision.
*sigh* time to drag my lumpy self off the couch and put the nappies on the clotheshore. I seriously can't be bothered with cloth ATM and it's taking every iota of motivation to keep it up  Seems a lot easier to grab a pack of sposies ATM but we've just got ourselves a car (yay for the redraw fecility!) so need every cent to get it sorted and ready. Can't complain as we got it at trade price but we have to organise the roadworthy etc hence no spare $$$ till we sell the other one (yadda yadda yadda I'm so sick of cars!).
-
Hi Ladies,
You are all probably sick of recommending nappies to those new to the mcn world but I do need some help...please????
Currently I use itti bitti d'lish snap ins and I love them, but DD is growing out of the mediums so quickly. She is 8 months and nearing 9kgs. In the last few days we have some poo leakage issues. I also have 2 gk pockets that I use. Up until now I have felt that the gks were too bulky.
Oh yeah I get a couple uses out of the itties because I use my own cloth as inserts as well.
Seeing that DD is growing out of the itti's it is time to consider my next purchase.
Do I get the next size up in the itti's? Are they going to last her for a long time?
Should I look at another brand...but which one is the problem?
Bare in mind that we will be going for another bub so the next bub will get use out of the mcn too.
I am looking for a nappy that is not too bulky, easy to dry and possibly re-use with my own inserts...My inserts are just tea towel like cotton that I fold and lay in the nappy.
Sorry for the long winded and abstract post
-
Hi Bek
I have just gotten my large Ittis
DD is just under 10 kg and they fit her. with the narrowness of the crotch etc i am sure they will do her for another 6 months... they will see what will happen.
I use Baby Beehinds a lot - they are one size fits all fitteds and i find them a great day (currently use overnight too) nappy - they last the longest with my daughter (although i know girsl here have had different expereinces). Going to sell off a few off my BBH to buy more AIO's for DH (need to keep him happy hehe).. PM if you are interested.
I just also got some Bum genius and am liking them too (OSFM) pockets.
I find the cute tooshies are way too low int he rise - and DD gets a tradies crack lol
Baby cheeks i like for the OSFM factor
Dont realy have many sized AIO's - a few magicalls but they are in large and WAY TOO BIG for dd atm.
Hope that helps.
