FJ - they are cute.... so you going to be selling them? ;)
Mel. I only have 2 bumg's AIO and 2 pocket Bumg's and really love them I want more aswell so am selling my others off to get them.
Hi,
I'm getting in really early with the cloth nappies - still got a long way to go. Was thinking about using prefolds to start with but wanted some advice on the type of covers to use with them for a newborn.
Would appreciate any advice on nappies for newborns.
Tarkene- covers i recomend are fleece covers, maz sells them, check out her sig...
I got fluffy today!!!
Woohoo 1 blue bum G!!
oh and some longies, dint come in the mail though.. got delivered by granny!! Here
i love them!!
Tarkine - so far I have used one of Maz's covers and a mother-ease - both bloody fantastic fits on a newborn. And if you are after nappies, I can highly recommend FJ's nappies - they are a great fit.
FJ - I think you should sell them too. They are too cute (and good for queensland weather I would imagine> ;))
Willow - i have a front loader and wash nappies in it
with a DELICATES cycle, that is a quick cycle, i doubt that would be enough agitation to get nappies clean. Stained stuff wouldn't be getting a pre-soak either.
the delicates cycle is for fine fabrics, stuff that says "handwash only" on the tag, needs low temps, cannot handle much agitation - whereas MCN can take up to 60 degrees hot water and needs ALOT of agitation.
i use the BABY CYCLE button on my LG Inverter.
It's basically a pre-soak cycle, a long wash cycle and a rinse cycle. takes two hours but is gentle on the MCN, saves water and when you take the nappies out of the machine, i find the spinning cycle gets heaps of water out (for quicker drying).
So if you don't have a baby cycle (and not many machines do), i would pick a longer cycle with the pre-soak option.
Front loaders are slower but you get used to that pretty fast. I put on loads to be going while i am out, use the timer to get loads to start first thing in the morning.
FJ - my aim in life is to surprise you!!
Gudism - it's good when you realise what works and what doesn't in your stash, allows you to re-evaluate - cull the dead wood, buy the winners. i did that at about 12 months in, cos i is slow, but i did feel cleansed afterwards!!
Willow - I use either the normal cycle or the stain cycle & follow with a rinse cycle HTH
WOHB - flat
Gigi - yeah I know. And this time round DH gets some input as well cos I asked him what nappies he likes best as well.... (his answer - anything without side snaps..)
So I can't wait to go shopping again.. its been too long..
Hey girls!
We got our shipment of BBH's fitted's the other day!! Bought them at the sale price so saved a bit of money and got a free AIO with the package!! :D I just love the BBH's!!
QUESTION - what nappy rash creams do i have to buy to use with MCN's that won't damage the nappy fabric?? I'm thinking just paw paw ointment? Would that do the job? What about Sudocreams? are they bad for MCNs? please let me know as i would like to buy some soon.
Ren, if you find you need to use creams you need, actually MUST use liners. All creams are going to build up & have a bad effect on your nappies. So a fleece liner for those times is highly reccomended.
Cornstarch poweder is ok though.
ok, so you don't really even need creams? What do you girls use? Just cornstarch powder? I notice J&J do one so i'll grab one of those (dont' wanna use talc!)
i just use cornflour from the baking isle in safeway.
I am not sure about all the extra things added int he j&j bottles.. it isnt just cornstarch iykwim
When i am knittig soaker #2...! yay
WOHB - bbb + PP's shorties
Ok, thanks guys...looks like different machines have very different cycles.
Gigi - it's not a delicates cycle as such, it does a pre soak, then wash, then rinse, then spin. It takes almost 2 hours and the nappies came out really clean (and there were lots of dirty ones in the load) much cleaner than my old top loader would have done. The 'delicates' cycles are different all together. This thing has like 15 different cycles! I guess it might be a bit of trial and error. Maybe I should try the 'coloureds' cycle, which is just like an every day wash and see the difference. I just thought the 'delicate synthetic' cycle would be a bit gentler on the nappies over time.
thanks for that, i'll make sure i buy the Cornflour from the cooking aisle.... yeah im a bit hesitant with J&J stuff....
one more question though - how do you 'shake'it on to babies butt or your hand? or do you just put it in a container and take it out with your hand?? LOL sorry for the dumb question but i need to know
ren, I also use cornflour. I just pour some into my hands, and rub it on their bum. If you end up having a girl, be careful with applying it around their vagina.
I don't use anything at all, so I'm not sure Ren :dunno: we've had nappy rash twice and I used cream with liners then but I don't use anything at all normally.
Renstar - I think most people put it in a shaker (like an empty talc container or a cheese/icing sugar shaker thingy). I don't use it though so I'm not talking from experience!
I'm very pleased with my MCN today... we went to the city for the day and had the following:
8 am - change into BBB + PUL for trip in car
10.15 am - change into BumGenius (for our first undressing at hospital!)
2pm (ish) - change into Cushie Tushies Minkee before bottle
6.00 pm (ish) - change very wet nappy for shower into night nappy (Sandmans)
I think they stood up rather well. The only leaking was the cushie tushie - but that was on him for ages in the capsule so it did ok!
I felt like shopping for MCN all day, but there's only one shop I know of in Adelaide that sells them and it was too far out of our way :( One other sells a few types (like pea pods) was about 15 mins walk from where we were going and because I wasn't sure what other brands they sold, didn't want to bother having the argument with DH as to why we NEEDED to go there ;)
I took a leaf out of your book Mel (Gudism) and asked DH what nappies he liked so I can have permission to buy more! Lucky for me, he likes the Blueberries too! I reckon a few more BG wouldn't go astray either...
Now I know that Liam is still under 6kgs I can confidently get some more nappies to suit his current size...
WOHB - Sandmans & Lovelybums wool cover
I use cream with liners too.
ETA: Not sure if this has been mentioned but BBH have a clearance on some of the Pocket Magicalls. They are $18 instead of $25. They are on clearance because they have a microfleece inner instead of a suedecloth.
Thanks for that Ash. I was going to wait until my nappies sold, but I think I might just go ahead and buy some more :D
Tarkine, for newborns, prefolds/flanellete flats are great. I loved my Motherease Rikki's (still do). Gussets around the legs are great for runny poop.
With washing, I've just started to separate my nappies: pooed in and not pooed in. Pooed in get the long wash with the prerinse, not pooed in just get a standard wash. :) I'll report back if this washing system turns out to be a dud.
WORB: Bamboo Sandaman
WOSB: Tots Bots
ETA: Oh yeah, with cream, sometimes I use Gaia Soothing lotion, with a liner (if I'm not using much, I might go without), and I also use Aromababy Bottom balm, without a liner. Basically, anything that rubs in doesn't need a liner, anything that works as a thick barrier might clog your nappies.
no worries willow, no hurry ;P
good to see you in here tarkine!!
i put nappies in the wash (frontloader) do a rinse cycle, put the rest of sophies clothes inand doa 30 or 40 degree cotton wash, takes about 90 mins!
nappy rash i use simmons pawpaw cream (not the lucas one) witout liner or gaia soothing lotion with a liner, i also have gaia baby powder which is cornstarch and lavender!
wohb wildchild
only a quicky (story of my life)
Ment ot be doing shop work ;) heheh thats what Jed thinks anyway
Jed left a IB on Mateauz from 4pm yesterday until 8am this morning!!!!! I had asked him to change him last night and he 'forgot' - not a good thing for a little boy with nappy rash that bad that its weeping. Stupid man wondered why Mat woke at 5.30 but got him back to sleep and I woke him at 8 cause I could smell something off! But he wasnt wet through at all...fabo girls!
Waiting for my cow iish fly - yes managed to score on on ebay for $14 WOO HOO!!!!!
Gigi - so glad I mad eyour day babe
ok Jed's coming...shhhhhh be very very quiet he might hear you
WILLOW - wow, you have the best delicates cycle on your washer, never heard of one like that before (i must be living under a rock! so sorry, just delete all i said).
REN - i used GAIA baby powder (main ingredient is cornstarch) when my bub was all chubby and had lots of skin folds that never seemed to dry (like her thighs).
The difference between the nappy rash creams is whether they are petroleum based or non=petroleum based ones. Or as someone recently put, the ones you rub in, or not.
Tarkine - prefolds are good for newborn stage, as the actual nappy. I've come to think trifolds are great too, cos of the reduced drying time.
Leg gusset covers worked really well for us, to contain the incredibly explosive and runny nb poo. e.g imse vimse (on special at Nurture Nappies right now), bambino mio. Not available when my child was a nb, but available now, are the THirsties and bummibrites, also with leg gussets.
I had a custom knitted WAHM item arrive today, which - i feel ill saying this - i don't like at all. The colours look different than it looked online (i would not put this on her - quite garish), and fit wise - the vest is shorter than needed and quite wide, looks out of proportion. I gave bilby's measurements so it could be made so bilby could wear it this winter and next winter - no way. I'm too scared to tell DH how much it cost, he thinks i am stuck with it cos i custom ordered it. Feeling so guilty. I know the WAHM will email me to ask if we like it and to see photos of bilby wearing it. i feel sick in my stomach just thinking about it (how to tell her). i was so excited to order this custom (we have no grandmas to knit for bilby) - now i just feel like a very extravagant idiot. The only good point i can find is: the wool is lovely and soft to touch. OK, vent over. Exiting confessional box. So how many hail marys do i have to say?
WOTBB: lotus night nappy and possum pouch soaker (great leg cuffs)
Gigi, for most good knitters (ie, not me :P) it's not impossible to add length to something, make longies or a vest longer. Width probably wouldn't be an option, but added length might be.
I think if I custom made something for someone, I would be upset if they weren't happy with it and felt they were stuck with it, when I could fix it in half an hour or so.
Gigi hon, you are NOT an idiot, these things happen, and it's so disappointing when they do. Most WAHMs are fantastic when something turns out not right - they want you to be happy.
Frontloader stuff: I do nappies on a 40 degree daily cycle (1 hour-ish) with an extra rinse, and clothes on a 30degree quick cycle. My machine only does pre-washes on a cotton cycle and can't be opened to add stuff once the cycle has started (I know, grrr), but this works pretty well for us.
Cream stuff: pawpaw (simmons) without liners, sunspirit calendula (lanolin base) / bepanthen / sudocream with liners. I make my own body powder for myself (cornflour, china clay and essential oils) and did make a baby version, but have never used it on him. This is a bit embarrassing, but when his bum is red I gently pat dry with a cloth then blow on it to dry it completely. I feel like a complete dill but he loves it - giggles his little head off. The things we do...
Boyo is about to pop off to bed soon (yes, at 11:30), so once he's down I might join him... Nighty night.
WOHB: whizz kidz nightz & bearbottoms MM fleece cover
Nelle, adding width is easier than you think! You just knit the extra piece and sew it in! It can be hidden in the stitching! I would think length might be a little harder, because you would have to get it all back onto the needles and unpic the cast off row.
Gigi, Honestly, if you gave the correct measurements and it doesnt fit then you didn't get what you paid for. Maybe measure the woolies with your sewing tape and if it is well off the measurements you gave then you can show her the measurements you took of the woolies, and the measurements you sent her. Then she is more than likely to fix it up. Ness has some longies being knitted custom (slowly  it is cold and my fingers freeze up) and if they dont fit either of the girls then i will happily make adjustments.
So I find out tomorrow about the CBA job, and hopefully I find out if I am UTD or not, can you all guess what will happen if both things go my way? lots of nappy purchasing with my pay! DH wants a LS. I went into Reece Plumbing yesterday to find out how much they do them for. Was over $100! My Jaw dropped!!! S I think I will be buying one online. Bunnings dont sell them any more but the guy at Bunnings did know what I was talking about!
I am thinking about posting a wanted ad in the classifieds and on B4B for a second hand one but I dont know how likely I am to find someone who want's to sell one :(
OUch Ali on the reece version of LS! yep scout the ebays for a while! :)
Gigi -i agree i would mention something as you ordered something custom and it should be custom :)
Well i am a little confused and want opinions.
DD has worn my hand knitted shorties the past 2 nights and her nappy it totaly soaked through! like totally! and she has leaked a little
night #1 - on her shirt/singlet (wicking)
Night #2 - front of pants at waist line (these were below the rise of my soaker)
I lanolised the soaker before use.
Do you think it is a problem with my soaker or that she doesnt have enough boosting if the nappy is as soaked as it is by morning? At the moment she has 12 layers of hemp/bamboo in her nappy for nights.
Perhaps i do need to invest in some night nappies (DH's comment = get disposables lol....any chance i tell you.. but on the up side he loves bumgenius'! lol what a turn around!).
Need to sell some of my BBB first though so i can afford some night nappies (wink wink FJ! ).
WOHB - mmmmmm not sure DH Changed her so i am putting my money on BG!
Ali I enquired at Bunnings about the LS and was quoted $102! I told them to forget it! ETA I just got one from mothersdirect for $74.95 :D
Gigi I'd double check the measurements too and if they aren't what you asked for then let her know. You're not an idiot darl!
Ren I use a zinc barrier cream for nappy rash and have some flushable liners to protect the nappy fro getting bunged up. They are weenees ones and the same packet has lasted almost 2 years as they are huge and I cut them in half. I only use them when there is bad rash though. When it's mild I use curash powder.
Gigi - you'll get a laugh out of this - last night I dreamed of Bilby in her woolies. She had on a pair of longies & a knitted skirt, and a little knitted vest. The longies and vest were a cream wool, and the skirt was variegated wool but I can't remember what colour. Green I think. She looked gorgeous in them too. You must have been the last thing on my mind last night (I posted just before going to bed)!!
Hi everyone :)
Just a newbie here but firstly wanted to say a BIG CONGRATUALTIONS TO ALLIOOPS
on her pregnancy  I hope everything goes really well !!
i am really trying to control my urge to buy - so thought I would ask for an opinion on Peapod Nappies.
I am looking at a pack where u get 10 nappies (size small 4-9 kg)
Each nappy comes with its own bamboo/cotton insert & 2 free night boosters and a
Pea Pod all of this for $200!!
I have read heaps of great things about bumgenius and not so much positive stuff about peapods??? Does this mean they are an AIO nappy??
OH I want to buy something - but a bit chicken!!!
Thanks if anyone can help.
I havent used peapods but yes have not heard many good reviews at all.
BG and PP are both pocket nappies - and i guess you get what you pay for.
at the moment i use Ittis and Baby beehinds (i had a party to start - charmalea did it for me and was a great way to touch and see the product!) and DH likes The bum genius and Baby cheeks (aio's)
You will find most will recommend getting 1 or 2 of different brands and see what you like to use with your bub! as some work better on some bubs than others.
A few of us sell preloveds in the classified sections to if you want to try them out that way.
I have quite a few preloved nappies and they work fine!! :)
But welcome to your new addiction! :P
p.s What do people think of Hautes OSFM?
WOHB - BBB + LJ longies
Thanks PinkPalace :)
I am thinking now abut buying about 6 bumgenius nappies in size 3???
I can get 6 for $160 is that a good price???
Does that mean all I need to buy are the inserts??? $7.00 each
Is there are cheaper way to do the inserts?? Can you just buy that microfleece stuff from spotlight to insert into the nappy???
With these bumgenius nappies do I need to buy a cover???
What age does this size 3 last from (it says 7-35 punds) do you think that this one size fits all compromises how well it fits the younger baby???
I am thinking of going a combo of dispsables/ prefolds and then some of these bumgenius nappies??
What about pocket ones - do you recommend any brands??
So sorry to just ask and ask questions  grateful for any firm suggestions.
Anna
Hey congrats Ali! Great news.
AnnaBelle, PP has given you some good advice. I've found Peapods to be alright, found they sized large though (as in, the smalls were leaning towards mediums), some people really like them, some people hate them. My advice would be to buy one, see how you like it, and go from there.
PP I've got some Hautes, I find them pretty comparable to BumG's really. I don't like the backs on them, there's not much of a flap to cover the stuffing, but I'm not sure why I don't like it, it's not really a problem! :P I found they fit newborn skinny legs better than my BumG's too.
I know I'm supposed to be in love with BumG's, but I can't find the love with Silas. I might have to give them back to Riv. I'm really struggling to find the pocket love with Si, whereas I can't fault fitteds with covers. It could be that Si is at that stage where he starts to wee for Australia. It could be that I'm still using the change at every feed system, but Si doesn't feed as frequently as I should change...
He's in a GreenKids at the moment anyway, gee I love GK's. We'll see how that goes.
In other news, Riv wouldn't sleep in his nap yesterday (unusual), I went in and he showed me the change table. So I sniffed his butt (bad idea), and he'd pooed! I wonder if we'll be ready to give TT a shot around this summer?
Better go wake Si, he's nodding off and we're already behind with feeds today.
ETA: AnnaBelle, if you're looking at sized BumGenius, then you're looking at the AIO's (All In Ones). The Pocket BumGenius are OSFM (One Size Fits Most).
Yes as nelle said - i have the OSFM BG.
If you are handy with a sewing machine go for it!
I sewed up 10 trifolds from bamboo fleece and microfibre and stuff my baby cheek pocket with them. :)
As for BG price - not sure sorry hun - i bought all mine preloved so obviously a lot cheaper! :)
Oh I just ordered some nappies (you call it fluffmail right? still learning the MCN lingo!)
I got a Green Kids Anytimes in Aqua, a Splashabout Happy Nappy Swim Nappy in Navy/White and a Bambineo Bamboo in cream.
We are already using Baby Beehinds magic-alls and one size as I found them in shop here and bought a few to try and we also have a couple of peapods which I haven't used on him yet cause they are too big.
Annabelle -check out this post, Bumg Sale from one of the market place members
Annabelle - with pockets, I love my BumG's, Happy Heiny's, Green Kids (lurrve my GK) and don't mind the Haute. I think I like Haute more than I thought I would... they fit DS really well. I'm just shopping round for some more pockets actually - selling some of my fitted ones that don't suit DS.
Ohh DD is startin to stir - probably after another feed (then another change of clothes as it goes EVERYWHERE... )
Can't remember what else I was going to say.
PP - yup I like the Hautes. I think thats what I was thinking of saying.
Oh, and I got the flats from the lovely Sarah (thank you Sarah_H) but don't know how to fold them!! They are much bigger than my other flats.. do you just try and fold them the same way????
WOAB: Sposie (day care - till I buy more BumG's!!!)
WOMB: errr... something that I got from FJ but don't remember the brand name.. lol.. we've been in cloth all day today ..woohoo!!!
Ladies
Unfort Ali sms me earlier and it was a chemical pg
Ali, hunny i am so sorry  I hope you get your much wanted BFP very soon
