So disheartened :( can't get on top of the nappy rash

Having sorted out our night nappy dilemma (BBH bamboo are wonderful thanks to those who recommended them !), we are still in a constant battle with nappy rash whenever a hot day hits - and that's a LOT in Melbourne
We have microfibre pocket nappies which have been great but it seems when sweat is in the mix the nappy rash hits and I end up putting DD in sposies for a couple of days til it heals then another bl***** heatwave hits and we're back to square one I hate having to use so many sposies!
I have been using sorbolene and cloth wipes instead of 'natural' baby wipes which has helped somewhat, trying to have twice daily nappy-free time, using paw paw ointment as a barrier cream....any other suggestions?
We trialed some Itti Bitti bamboo snap ins which I love and reckon would be better on hot days so we were waiting til DD grew big enough for the medium size to order some, but we are about to go away to NZ for most of February (will be using sposies on the road) so there isn't any point getting them now only to have them sit in a box for 4 weeks

is there a chance its fungal??? try daktozin from the chemist its awful to see their little tooshes with a rash


if you use a zinc based cream such as daktozin you will need to use a liner with cloth

What pockets are you using? Are they made with suedecloth on the inner? DS can't wear suedecloth anymore, he rashes straight away. He wasn't like that when he was younger, but he is now, so I traded my stash of suedecloth pockets (green kids mainly) with my cousin who gave me some more BBH's.

I was thinking that it sounds like a fungal infection also. My DS3 had issues with a fungal infection for over two months. The only thing that worked for me was feeding him natural yoghurt and using the Daktozin cream to celar it up. Otherwise for a normal nappy rash, I swear by Disitin. Hope it clears up for you soon.

Also, if it is fungal, you will need to do an anti fugal and strip wash on your nappies to stop if from re-occuring.

I agree - it could well be fungal. We are using sposies full time and DD had a NR that I could not get rid of. No creams were working.

I went and saw the ECHN and she said it was a fungal rash. We used a canestan cream and it cleared in record time.

Hmmmmm _ I hadn't considered fungal rash as it only occurs on hot days but you could be right
Whoops - What's a 'strip wash'? Is there a special washing powder/soap I need to use? DD isn't eating solids yet but yoghurt is a big part of my diet and I intend to feed her lots of it when the time comes.
Arimeh - they are Haute pockets (supposedly same design as Bumgenius) - not sure if that is 'suedecloth'? DD was fine in them til about a month ago - the first heat wave she had no problems so may well be due to fungus after all

Canasten (anti-fungal cream) has worked for a really nasty nappy rash in the past, as has Betadine (which I used with sposies so I didn't stain cloth).

there's ya problem right there hon.

I tried everything with V...she was continuously red and blistered......I stripped washed (washed nappies in hot water with a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid and rinsed until all the bubbles were gone) but she still got it.

I had to sell the lot and start from scratch but it fixed out problem.

I have had to buy custom made nappies from wahms of the following combo

bamboo fleece for absorbing NO microfibre what so ever!

suede cloth lining was out...kids reacted to that so have gone to velour lining or bamboo velour lining.

NO PUL if I can help it.

AND I strip wash once a month just incase

Ive found genesa forgenappies are very airing, absorbent and we havent *knock on wood* had nappy rash troubles since making the change to them and auriels .

Auriels or CVherubs kiss's can be hard to get hold of...you can email them and ask for a custom order...Lesley and angel are fabulous to deal with.

Genesa Forge have custom slots up on the site all the time. Nikki is a top chicky aswell. If you buy 6 nappies from her you get a 7th for free.

You may have to bite the bullet hon....honestly it was the best thing I did

Ayeee! I'm going to give the anti-fungal cream and strip wash a go first cos honestly we are flat broke at the moment and there's no way we can afford to buy a whole new set of nappies We're putting off getting the Itti Bittis til after going to NZ as it is (a necessary trip to meet family not a frivoulous jaunt). I do get you about just cutting to the chase and starting again but it's just not an option for us at the mo

If you have rescue remedy you can mix a few drops into the sorbolene you are using too.

Can you sew? Maybe you can make some of your own If it turns out it is the microfleece causing a rash from chafing, then you can make a flanelette or cotton/bamboo velour inner.

sorry only just saw this thread... yes the bbh bambo nappies are fab what we do here as we have had a battle with ds 17 months when he has a rash we change him every 1.5 hours during day if using bbh bambo... If terry cloth every 1 hour no exceptions and bathing everyday in the morning after the night time and this helped. We had big issues even the end of his woohoo was sore but got better real quick the antibacterial properties in bamboo are excellent we used no creams or anthing.

Plain old ordinary corn flour from the supermarket is THE best thing for nappy rash. My daughter had terrible nappy rash for ages, and I tried everything, until a friend who's worked in child care for 20 years suggested corn flour. It's fantastic. Just sprinkle a liberal amount on bubs as soon as you see any redness.
Also, I found changing my washing powder made a big difference. Even though I do an extra rinse every wash I still found Omo Matic was too harsh for my little one's bot. Omo Sensitive is fine.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions - I'm using most of them!
Turns out we had a peristsant case of thrush so we're hitting it with the 'hard stuff' (Canesten) at the mo, then will use the RCH Nappy Goo once healed (my naturopath reckoned that it was a great formulation ).
Not sure what we'll do about getting back into the cloth once we're back from our NZ holiday but we're investigating a compostible nappy service (Eenees) in our area for day as every MCN seems to have some form of fleece/sudedecloth involved and keep up the BBH bamboo night nappies....will keep you posted!
