I actually had someone apologise to me when I said "remember when you said that I wouldn't be able to use cloth, well I did with DD1 for 3 years and now they are on DD2 and have been for over a year" She said "yeah sorry i shouldn't have said that and been a bit more supportive". I think that one comment blew all of the negative ones away

I'm sorry hon but I just loved reading your hormone induced rant teheheeheheheh on a serious note forget about them! I think most people would actually love to use cloth if they weren't so lazy. I think they lack the energy to do it and everyone knows that they are the more economical and environmental way to go. Honestly I think they try to bring you down to make themselves feel better. I haven't started using my cloth nappies but I have to say that my bamboo prefolds are still my fav baby item!!! (sad I know) but I still don't know if cloth will work for me, if it doesn't there's no way I'd bag anyone else who uses them, what would be the point? To declare out loud that I failed at it and they haven't? In my logical mind that just doesn't make sense

Um... more work? You have to change their nappy anyway, MCN are just like disposables, chuck it on, do up the velcro or snaps, you're done.
Yes they need washing but... it's not like you HAND wash them. That's what a washing machine is for? Then just hang them up and let the sun do the rest?

The only extra step is disposing of the poo. But it doesn't take more than a minute or two to chuck it in the toilet...

Ignore everyone. We got the same crap, but obviously we and heaps of other people use cloth for two years plus so it's not impossible. And it's so much cheaper!!!!!! We never finished the boxes of nappies that were given to us (for when we realised cloth was too hard ), just had no need to. Even when we thought 'oh maybe we should just use them up since we have them' we never could bring ourselves to do it hahahaha. Especially in the early days, the massive poospolsions that went up the back and out the legs only came out of disposables. Funnily enough our cloth caught it all! And cloth is way cuter! Plus disposables have a funny smell I reckon.

We did find though, that most people thought we were talking about flat nappies. When we told them about MCN and especially AIOs with the cover sewn in and you put it on like a disposable, most people were pretty impressed! Even my SIL who was our biggest critic while I was pregnant now uses the cloth instead of disposables (that we sent just for her) when Jazz stays at her place. If Jazz stays overnight she even has them washed and drying for us when we go to pick her up!

LOL - yeah and our toilet is between the bedroom and the laundry so I just have to stop on the way to the nappy bucket (which incidentally is MUCH closer to the bedroom than the outside bin which is where I would have to walk to to dispose of the sposie!)

when i was talking cloth before DD was born, my mum said that if she looked after DD, i'd have to get sposies for her - i replied with something along the lines of DD not going to visit without me there until she was toilet trained! mum then said she'd buy sposies herself. i told her there was no need, and if i got wind of her putting sposies on DD when there were perfectly good MCN's there, again, i'd not leave her there.

fast forward 13 months - DD now goes to mum's between 1 and 3 days a week while i work. before i started back at work when DD was 10 months, mum asked me how to wash the nappies so she could have them all washed at the end of the day for us, and did i want her to have a stash at her place!! given we have plenty, i said not to worry about it, we supply nappies for her (that match her clothes for the day lol), and all we ask is that she gets rid of solids and puts them in the wet bag. Mum has taken to cloth nappies like a duck to water. she loves them, loves showing them off. she has her faves (as we all do). she will happily change DD anywhere and talk to anyone who asks about our choice to use cloth and how convenient it all is.

oh, and like Nai - our bucket is in the laundry right beside our loo so we just throw the nappies in, and chuck a load of nappies on each night before bed, hang them out in the morning, and all is good. we have a fair sized stash because it CAN take a few days to dry here as it is quite cool and we dry inside during winter (yay for space) - during summer they're dry by midday!

ive had nothing but support for using cloth so i find myself lucky in that way and it has saved me so much money coz in the beginning i was spending $15 a week on sposies and also coz DS was on formula which was $20 a week too it just got way too expensive to not use cloth and i love it and im already planning on using cloth from day dot for this bubba and the hospital im having them in use cloth anyway i have had a few ppl ask questions but no one tell me its too hard or silly

This is the thing that always surprised me. Everyone in MG would be talking about the poosplosions and I'd never had one... but these were people who didn't want to use cloth as they hate dealing with poo? I'd rather just change a poo nappy than be wiping it all up all over your child then washing all their clothes. Funnily enough we seemed to get by with a lot less clothes than they did too so the "extra" load of washing I was doing on nappies, they were doing on clothes anyway.

I don't use cloth at night (was making the girls rash up too much unfortunately so we need the break from MCN's) but I do miss putting DS in cloth....even though I have the two girls in cloth.. LOL

very true re: poosplosions! We've only ever had one escape, and that was with an Aldi nappy while we were travelling..it was gross! With cloth they might have come close to going out the top, but it never has. Well, except for one time when I didn't realise her singlet was tucked into her nappy, not just her pants!

Good on you for sticking up for what you believe in. I don't understand where people think they get the right to be so judgemental on other peoples lives, I'm sure they would be first to get the ****s up if it was done to them.

We got the comments too but suprisingly both our mums are really supportive of us using cloth and my mum has contributed to my stash..........probably coz DH & I back when were born terry flats were they only option they had and everyone used cloth - god that makes us sound so old lol

I had someone commented at my babyshower when I got a nappy bucket & two MCN's "yeh I see that lasting, I give you two weeks"..........3 months later here we are and I love using them, it's really not that much extra work doing an extra load of washing every couple days and I like hanging out my nappies on the clothesline and then sitting and stuffing/folding them. Just gotta convince DH I "really" need some more

i am so useless with anything housework and my only issue with cloth is getting a big enough stash that i dont run out if they dont dry and finding enough sun to sun out the stains. admittly i do use sposies when we r out but thats becos my wetbag is waiting for me to find the time to sew the zip on....

I have been really slack with using my cloth nappies over the past few months since I went back to work and the boys have been at daycare, but just in the past week or 2 I have started using them all the time at home and at night again. I didn't realised how much I missed cloth. I had a real sense of contentment hanging out a full load of nappies this morning. weird huh?
Don't listen to any of the rubbish. If you want to use MCNs then use them. It isn't like the other people have to wash the nappies for you. MCNs are sooooo much cuter too. And as far as water goes... we were on level 6 water restrictions, had 2 boys full time in cloth and still used under the recommended amount of water for just 2 adults. Do what makes you happy.

Water for washing them - they use more to make the disposables than you do washing cloth nappies!

I haven't had a chance to read through everyone else's replies, but I had to say something.

Don't doubt for a second your choise to use cloth.
I've only been using them for a few weeks now but they are by far HEAPS better then disposables. Unfortunatley I don't have enough yet to use them exclusively so I have to use disposables once in a while (soon I'll have enough...soon). When ever I but B in disposables he gets all red and hot looking under his diaper, he gets a nappy rash and they don't even come close to containing his pees. So I get to change my clthes and his if I'm holding him or if he's in bed I have to do his sheets and mattress protector, his wrap and sometimes his blankets (so as far as being more work beadcuse you have to wash them it's actually more work for me to have to use the disposables.
I've never had a single pee leak with my MCN's and I've only had one or two explod-a-poos make it out (but I don't think anything would have contained those).

I love my terry cloths, I am so uncoordinated with disposables/conveniance nappies that it is really easier for me to fold, wrap, snap and cover lol noone around me understands that but I guess I just feel more comfortable with the structure and really what is an extra load of washing? You chuck it in the appropriate bucket till you are ready to do the laundry, it takes all of 2mins to chuck them in the washing machine and switch it on, 5-10mins to hang them out, 2mins to bring them in and then 5-10mins to fold and put them away. What's that, like 15-25mins out of a whole day, not even? I so do not get the hating on cloths, perhaps they are just jealous that they cannot be bothered taking out the time to be bothered? My DS is now fully toilet trained (has been for months and he is almost 3 ) and I attribute that to being in cloth and lots of nappy free time so that is even less money spent on disposables lol.
I used to be niave and thought cloth would be great for home and diposables for out but I tried that the day I left hospital... I gave all the newborn nappies away after that. I hadn't even brought then myself anyways, I was brought them even though I had told everyone I was using cloth because, according to them, there was no way I was really going to go past even a couple of days using cloth *sigh*
I will definately use my terries for #2 and hey, no set up fees this time, I can reuse DS's ones lol, jokes on them.

But I actually feel guilty for using sposies.

Thanks for starting this thread! This is something that has been playing on my mind for ages - nice to read all the responses & feel not so alone! NO ONE I know IRL uses cloth.

It's getting to the point for me as a MCN user, I dread changing DS out, especially MG. I just know how the conversation is going to go & I'm tired of defending myself! I don't question any sposie user, but for reason everyone has to question me & my choice. I also find people will give me their excuses for not using cloth - as if I care! Or as a PP mentioned, being told that I'm good for using cloth. I'm not good, I'm just doing what I do just like any other parent out there.
Ah and the poo question! I always say "Well it's not different to using a sposie as you have to remove the poo before throwing it in the bin, don't you?" LOL

Oh and we used sposies while on a recent interstate holiday. We couldn't WAIT to get back home & get DS back into his cloth! The sposies smelled very chemically & we were so unco at putting them on him LOL!
