OK so I am getting really interested in prefolds and the different types of flats available and want to stock some but having never used them I am at a bit of a loss. I know you can use them in a pad fold inside a good cover or fold the wings out. Is that the best way to use them? I have some hemp ones from cottonbabies that fit inside our newborn covers perfectly (but obviously don't have a newborn to practice on) Is there anything else I should know? Also what other types of prefolds are good?
Flats - OK so we have some flanellette which I like and I have just got some gorgeous printed muslin flats in. Anyone used muslin flats before? Love to hear about your expereinces and reasons for using them.
Can I also ask a question, what is the best size to buy? I was going to buy some for my bub thats due in december and was wondering if I buy the newborn size will I still be able to use them as liners when bubs is bigger and into fitted or will they be too short?
I used prefolds on DS on and off until he was about 6 months old. After that he was too wiggly and I couldn’t coordinate the prefold in the cover and get them both on his bum. So I switched to fitteds+covers which were easier and now I’m on pockets and AIOs which are even easier still. And he doesn’t have runny poo anymore and we go though less nappies a day, so it all works really well.
I think that leg gussets on the PUL covers are a must for prefolds. You really need them for poo containment (in those first few months) and they help keep the prefold in place.
Thanks Rachel - I have some beaut newborn covers ready to coordinate with them. We are doing up a specialise newborn part so i'm having heaps of fun gathering all these tiny nappies together.
I love, love, love my prefolds. I use Bummis wraps. I find I have to update the wraps before I update the prefolds. Oh, and if you have some old terries, just use two in the wraps. I bought a MCN and found that compared to my prefolds it was just a LOT of material to wash.
