    Losec

    Hi Everyone,

    Just another question on Losec.My 3 and half month old was prescribed Losec last Monday half a table.The pharmacist made it up into a liquid as she said this would be easier to administer.She was wrong!We tried everything in formula, breastmilk,off a spoon in a syringe but he just hates the taste of it.After many phone calls with the pharmacist I went back and got the tablets instead.As his dose is half a tablet she said I would need to open them and count the tiny balls inside and half them(there are 70!)and to put it on pureed pear.The problem was his age so I had to make sure he was allowed pear.The nurse I spoke to said the problem is at this age his gut has not developed to take solids but if this is the only way to use the smallest amount of pear and put the tiny balls on it.I actually tried him on some today and he took it fine so its looking good.Has anyone else done is this way?Also when should I start seeing an improvement hes been on it since Monday.He does seem a bit happier I think but hes still not good at night waking every hour uncomfortable and his nose is so stuffy and breathing is so raspy like the acid has got into his sinuses the poor fella.

    My god that sounds like a nightmare to count the balls!! I wonder how much it really matters? A few balls here and there?

    I'm no pharmacist and have only been doing this for a few days myself but we were advised:
    * to half the tablets using a sharp knife
    * dissolve in 3 ml water (takes about a minute)
    * draw up in syringe
    * squirt into DS's mouth

    HOWEVER: we find putting the halved tablet into the syringe and then adding water works best. You dont miss any of the tiny balls that you do when drawing up the liquid. We have recently been adding milk to the syringe to disguise the taste, we need to fill the syringe 2-3 times to make sure all the meds have gone down. This morning DS was happily taking his medication while smiling and cooing. We noticed the difference in a day or two. Now 5 days later he is a different child. Good luck

    There has been a number of LOSEC threads lately.

    My son was on the half a tablet twice a day. I was dissolving in 5mls of water in a syring ebut found that a lot of the balls were still in syringe after (if u dont wash syring straight away they go black in syringe).
    I then went to a compounding pharmacy and got it made up as a suspension and give him 2.5 mls twice a day. I have found using a 1 ml syringe is easier and squiring far back in his throat he does spit some out and does gag at times.

    I would not be mixing in food at his age.

    Perserve with giving it to him, they dont like it cause itis bitter when i get my next bottle the pharmacist is going to check out what flavours he can add to make it taste better for him (only got a new bottle yesterday so will be a while) maybe thats worth asking.

    good luck hope that helps

    My wee one is also on the suspension. At first she was reluctant but gradually she took it no problem. I think you just have to keep giving it and like most routines they eventually get used to it!

    hey !! I know how hard it is to try and administer the losec. My son darcy was told he had reflux at 2 weeks and has been hardest time of my life. I also tried the liquid form and had to give him like 20ml a day - it just wasn't practical so I was dissolving it in a bit of breast milk and he had it fine thank god! If your worried about the pear, I say that as long as it's a small amount and working at least it is helping the reflux . My peaditrician said that the losec would take 6 weeks to have a full effect but I really think you can notice a difference sooner.

    Has your baby got silent reflux or normal reflux?

    I would love to talk to other people that have or have had reflux babies because I'm 20 years old and none of my friends understood what a hard time I was having with darcy with the silent reflux and post natal depression that they all gave up on me - so I really do it on my own now! Which is why I have joined the forum.

    Darcys_mum, it is very hard but thankfully I have a great partner and very supportive friends! I'm here if you need any support!

    My daughter has silent reflux and thankfully it isn't as bad as some that I know of but it can still be a rough road!

    Hi Darcys mum,

    My little man has silent reflux.I know what you mean how hard it is dealing with a baby with reflux I have to say the last 5 months have been the hardest thing I have ever done.My husband has been great but he is fighting his own battle going through chemo and I also find it very hard being on the other side of the world from my mum and sister(I am in NZ they are in Ireland).Also I feel that really I have gotten nowhere with everything we have done to try and help the reflux.He now takes Zantac and Losec,2 homeopathic remedies, an probiotic and as hes also teething and has colic 2 homeopathic remedies for that also.I also tried dairy free and gluten free and it made no difference.We also brought him to a chiropractor and an osteopath and they said there is something wrong with his shoulder and the chiropractor taped it up.But just tonight after an hour of him being asleep he woke up screaming and I felt like we have got nowhere.Also the drugs seems to make him terribly constipated to the point he is in pain and we had to give him prune juice for that which worked I think.Its definantly a very hard road but one thing I have noticed every baby is so different and reacts differently to treatments etc.
    Take care

    Wow Darcy's mum you poor thing. My 3 month old has silent reflux. We found out when he was 5 weeks old. Its really hard to deal with a reflux baby and Im sad to hear you have lost friends because of what you have been through.
    We do 1/2 tablet twice a day mixed with water in a syringe. He hated it to start with, but we persevered and just shoot it straight down his mouth. Now he takes it really well. After a feed we still have to hold him up right for half an hour and we also give him stomach calm (a natural medicine). it does get easier i promise
    Hilary- I really feel for you going through such a hard time with bubs and your husband. Its really hard having a sick baby, I cant imagine how much harder it is for you with your husband being unwell. My husband gets a 'man cold' and I crumble having to do bubs on my own. Stay strong!
    Good luck to you both.
