my MIL taught me a great way but its hard to describe!! but i'll try!
sit bubs in lap as per normal for burping, place hand under chin, gently press your palm onto bubs sternum/stomach are (where it naturally sits) and move baby back and forward, side to side, the idea is to move the *bubbles of wind* to the top of the tummy so they escape (its like when you see a bubble in a bottle of thick liquid.. and you move the bottle around to get the bubble to the top... make sense)
I also put DD across my thighs - head down to the floor for a few pats. I wouldn't hold her there for too long & if your baby is a bit of a spewy one, best to put a cloth beneath
with DD2 i put her over my shoulder mostly but i have to "stir the wind" i rub her back then pat...else i could pat all day and wouldnt get a burp. My dads wife used to hold Milly so she was laying along her arm on her tummy...Milly hated it but dads wife insisted it was a good way of bringing up wind so im guessing that works for some babies.
