    Getting Losec down!

Our 3 month old Monster had just commenced Losec for suspected silent reflux. I just gave him 2ml of the compounded liquid and he HATED it! Notwithstanding tears and some interesting facial expressions, I managed to get most of it down. He may only be 3 months but he is a smart one and I fancy that he will soon cotton on to the process and refuse to take it. Any suggestions as to how I can get it down?

    Thanks a lot

Hi hun, Try tilting him back (in a bouncer is perfect angle), and using one hand to 'squish' his cheeks up, with one finger on each side of his face, so his lips go all pouty, like a fish. the give him a little at a time and work his cheeks with your fingers, squeezing them gently.

I hope that makes sense, it's hard to explain, but if you hold their cheeks 'in' they can't spit it back up.

i used to give Ds his zantac with a little expressed milk before a bf, to make it taste more familiar, had no problems from then on. I think they get used to it with time. If he's having formula you could just pop it in his bottle and he wouldn't know the differance. as long as you know he's drinking the whole bottle.

    All the best

I dissolved the tablet in a 10ml syringe with cold water (took alot of gentle shaking) and gave it to her that way. Just topped her up with water afterwards. Good luck hun, it can be a bum ache some days

I pretty much did as LoriRae did, but also found stroking his throat with my fingertip helped too. It always made him swallow (wish it would work with veggies now ).

We had the Liquid at first too and DD cottoned onto it would see the syringe or dropper and start crying. Now we have to dissolve the tablets which can be a pain but I've found disolving the tablet in 3ml of gripe water works a treat. DD is now happy to take it. I've also realised that a dropper over a syringe is much easier to manage for us. Goodluck they're definatley smart babies!

Sam I used to, and are once again back on, the tablets. When he was a bub I used to dissolve them in a teaspoon of EBM then suck it into a syringe. I also had an extra 5-10mls of EBM that once he had the first dose I would give him via the syringe to get the last little granules out of the syringe.

Now I drop the tablet into a 5ml syringe and fill it with warm water and wait for it to breakdown to the granules. Jake has a big drink of water in between mouthfuls (take a few goes) and then we use apple juice to flush the syringe and get those last stubborn bits.

Happy to chat to you anytime about it.

    Thanks so much, everyone.

LoriRae - your suggestion worked a treat (thought Monster didn't think so haha!). I just gave him his bottle afterwards and all was soon forgotten - and there were no tears!

jamakin - I am a bit worried to pop it in his bottle just incase he hates it enough to associate taking his bottle with something horrible. If he starts rejecting his bottle then we could be in for another, much bigger, challenge. I am hoping that he does get used to it. He will pretty much drink anything, so hopefully...

Team_MK - We are using the compounded formula, and haven't really explored the option of using the tablets - yet! I will definitely explore that avenue if he continues to hate the liquid.

mrscricket - thanks for the throat tip - gosh the things you learn when you need to get stuff down their gullets! Good luck with the vegies, hun.

Ellee05 - Our Monster loves Gripe Water - will definitely give that a go if we move him onto the tablets.

Nelly - thanks so much, sweetie. I may pop around for a demo if and when we move onto the tablets I spoke to Shannon yesterday and she said that there is a chemist in Keperra that flavours the compounded formula with something other than the nasty banana stuff. Apparently O & J hated the banana, but take this flavour no problem. So I think that will be the next step and, failing that, the tablets it will have to be!

Perhaps you ladies can clarify dosage for me, please. The nurse we saw said that because Monster is quite large for his age we should be administering 2ml twice daily. The doctor agreed, but the pharmacist said 2ml once a day, at the worst time of the day. He said it lasted for 24 hours so twice a day isn't necessary. My friend said yesterday that she gave her bubs 1ml twice daily. So I am confused and really want to make sure that my boy is getting what is required to get some quick results. Thanks again

DS was on losec from 5 weeks till about 7 and 1/2 months. We started with tablets and then changed to compounded liquid, he still hated it but was slightly easier to get down and much easier for me as no need to dissolve tablet and not clog syringe with coating stuff.

Our compounding pharmacy actually flavoured it for him with pineapple and cocconut. (they have to be careful what they flavour with as it can not alter the ph of the losec as of course it is to settle stomach acid.)

    good luck with it

Thanks, feeb. Apparently the "tutti-frutti" flavour is a bit of a winner - I hope our Monster thinks so too! I agree that the liquid is much easier and I will definitely try and stick with it. Having said that, we are traveling overseas in December and I may have to use the tablets then because I won't be able to keep the compound liquid cold throughout the journey.
